Ragging at public universities must stop

Ragging at public universities must stop

It is disturbing to note that there is no sign of abatement of ragging at the public universities in the country. According to a report of this newspaper yesterday, the failure of the proctorial bodies of the country’s premier universities to ensure discipline is pushing up torture and ragging incidents, which go unheeded and unpunished in most cases. Students continue to face torture, ragging, harassment, and assault by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists without anyone to defend them. The newcomers of universities, including Dhaka University, Rajshahi University, Jahangirnagar University, and Chittagong University are mainly the victims. There are allegations that although complaints are lodged against the trouble-makers action is scarcely taken.

Many students do not even lodge complaints out of fear and despair. First-year students are ordered to participate in regular political and guestroom programmes organised by student wings of political parties. These students are forcibly sent to the guest rooms of the varsity. If newcomers fail to pay heed to their seniors’ orders, they would be deprived of their hall seats. There are also allegations of running torture cells at the hall dormitories.  The students belonging to the party in power flex their muscles over activities centering seats at dormitories. Freshers become the main victims.

Student politics these days strike panic among the peace-loving people. Many students now work as hooligans various political parties. They act according to the dictates of their political masters. Terrorism, vandalism, extortion, killing and ‘admission business’ have become rampant among various groups of students. In fact, student politics has become vitiated. There are politicians who use some leaders and workers of the front organisation to serve their own purpose. The overall interest of the country takes a back seat.

The present government has various achievements in different sectors of the country. Through these achievements the government has earned the confidence of the people. The government’s uncompromising stand in matters of taming the religious extremists and dark forces deserves special appreciation. But all these achievements will be marred if government fails to rein in the unbridled terrorism let loose by a section of students. The disturbing elements should be identified and punished without mercy.
