BCL wants DUCSU VP to quit

OUR CORRESPONDENT, DU

The Chhatra League panel members of the Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) have demanded the resignation of its vice- president (VP), Nurul Haque Nur, over allegations of corruption. On the other hand, Nur has claimed he will resign if any allegation against him can be proved after investigation. Some 23 Chhatra League members of DUCSU, headed by its general secretary, Golam Rabbani, raised the allegations at a press conference at the DUCSU office building yesterday. They alleged that Nur was involved in illegal tender business and monetary transactions. They came up with the charges after an unverified audio clip surfaced in which a person was heard

requesting another to be a bank guarantor for a project. Another conversation between the DUCSU VP and an expatriate Bangladeshi over a monetary contract was leaked on a private broadcasting channel on December 3. In the audio clip, the expatriate asked Nur to send his bank account along with an email address. Ducsu member Rakib Hossain Rakib read out a written speech that demanded Nur’s resignation. It stated that Nur should be investigated for corruption, which was revealed in a leaked phone call conversation.

When contacted, Nur claimed that only a portion of his phone conversation, which had taken place two months ago, was published to tarnish his reputation.

Terming the conversation completely personal and business-related, Nur said he was talking to a man about a bank guarantee of Tk. 13 crore for his aunt’s construction firm.

“After all this, if the allegations against me are proved, then they (DUCSU Chhatra League panel members) will not have to ask me, I will resign myself,” he claimed. “How can a person (Rabbani), who is accused in cases of extortion, tender business and drug abuse, raise such allegations against someone else?” he added. The BCL panel of DUCSU also alleged that Nur had not spent a dime from the budget of Tk. 5 lakh that is allocated for the DUCSU vice- president to spend on student welfare. While Nur said that his application to withdraw the money went unanswered several times, Rabbani countered that the VP had not filed any such application.

Recently, Rabbani was removed from his position as general secretary of the central Chhatra League when an allegation came to light that he and then president Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon had approached the Jahangirnagar University vice-chancellor to extort money from her.
