Archers take gold tally to 14 in SA Games

It was a real ‘Golden Day’ for the national athletes in the ongoing XIII South Asian Games as Bangladesh bagged seven gold medals yesterday. Of the total, archers brought the biggest chunk of laurels bringing forth the cause for celebrations by way of winning six gold medals with the women cricketers adding yet another to the gold tally. Bangladesh archers won all six finals on the day to clinch gold medals while the female cricket team won a two-run thriller against their Sri Lankan counterpart in the final to bag the gold medal. With the latest ones, the total tally of gold medals, won by Bangladesh up to the eighth day of the XIII SA Games, reached 14.

In fact, the 621-member contingent from Bangladesh for the SA Games was expected to deliver more gold medals. The archers simply lived upto the expectation by winning all six gold medals.

It was so far the best day for Bangladesh athletes in the history of SA Games when seven gold medals were won in a day. After winning the gold, archers and cricketers joined weightlifters Mabia Akhter Simanta and Ziarul Islam, karatekas Mohammed Al Amin, Marzana Akhter Piya and Humayra Akhter Antora and Dipu Chakma of Taekondo and Fatema Mujib of fencing to take the gold medals’ tally to 14 for Bangladesh.

Earlier, the women cricketers won the gold medal defeating

Sri Lanka at the Rangashala Stadium in Pokhara in a pulsating final when the result was settled in the very last over.

After being sent to bat first, the Bangladesh women could manage a total of 91 runs from the stipulated 20 overs losing eight wickets and managed to restrict the Sri Lanka team to 89 runs to win a thrilling final – thereby bagging the gold medal.

Held in Pokhara this year, the South Asian Games is called the biggest sports competition dubbed as the ‘Olympic’ of the region.

Men’s recurve team, represented by archer Roman Sana, Mohammed Tamimul Islam and Mohammed Hakim Rubel, opened the account on the day to win gold medal when they defeated Sri Lanka by 5-3 points in the final.

In the women’s recurve team event, Mosammat Eti Khatun, Mehna Akhter Monira and Beauty Roy outplayed Sri Lanka by 6-0 to win gold.

In the recurve mixed team, Bangladesh defeated Bhutan in the final when Ruman Sana-Mosammat Eti Khatun pair defeated Bhutan by 6-2 points and earned the second gold from archery.

Men’s compound team, comprising Mohammed Sohel Rana, Asim Kumar Das and Mohammed Ashikuzzaman, defeated Bhutan by 225-214 points to win gold.

In the women’s compound team event, gold medal was won by Bangladesh with Shushmita Bonik, Shuma Biswas and Shaymoli Roy eliminating the Sri Lankan team by 226-215 points.

In the mixed compound team event, Mohammed Sohel Rana and Shushmita Bonik won gold defeating hosts Nepal team by 148-140 points.

The archers will fight today for four individual gold medals of women compound, men’s compound, women’s recruve and men’s recurve. Three bronze medals in men’s compound, women’s recurve and men’s recurve will also take place today.
