Govt happy over rise of rice price: Minister

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

The government wanted in last eight month that the price of rice to increase to profit the farmers and now happy over the recent rise of rice price, said Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzak. He was addressing as a chief guest at a programme at Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) in the capital yesterday.

“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has lowered fertiliser prices for the fifth time to reduce the cost of production of agricultural crops to make the farmers profitable,” said the agriculture minister. The minister also emphasized on increasing local crop production to reduce dependency on import.

He said in a populous country, only 8.75 million hectares of land have been cultivated and food self-sufficiency has been achieved. Now Bangladesh has also achieved the status of food surplus country.

It has become possible for the agriculturalists and for our hard working farmers, said Razzak.

“About 65 thousands hectares of agricultural land is decreasing annually due to urbanisation and industrialisation. In view of this, we have to produce more crops in the same land and we also have to prioritise soil health,” said the agriculture minister.

The minister said Bangladesh has experienced successful revolution in different sectors including economy, Padma Bridge, ICT, Education, Health, and Industry. Bangladesh is being praised all over the world, he added.
