Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu said the looming special edition of the Akash DTF Bangabandhu-Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is crucial for them as they will be eyeing to fill up the lacking in T20 cricket through this BPL ahead of the ICC World T20-2020.

The BCB president Nazmul Hassan Paapon frequently said they are attempting to make the BPL as a platform for developing their T20 squad for the next ICC World T20, scheduled to be held Down Under. The president has given directives to all the participating teams to include leg-spinner, pacer and hard-hitting batsmen on a mandatory basis.

Echoing the sentiment with the BCB president, Nannu said they are eager to find out some quality leg-spinners and fast bowlers along with pinch-hitting batsmen from the BPL.

It is obvious to see the seriousness of the board when they sacked two coaches during the concluded National Cricket League (NCL) for not fielding leg-spinners two months back.

“All the players we have included in the BPL squad as this BPL is very crucial for us to test them,” said Minhajul Abedin.

“ICC World T20 is drawing nearer. We’ve a lot of T20 matches coming ahead. Our performance is vital there. We’re working in the areas where we have been lacking,” Nannu told media at the National Cricket Academy of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.

“The management of the national team coupled with all we want to see better performances from the players in the specific areas what will seek to see it in the BPL. If we get some players from BPL, it will then be a plus point for us,” he added.

The chief selector said that local cricketers should learn from foreign cricketers in the BPL while they will be sharing the same dressing room in the blockbuster T20 tournament.

“Lot of good foreign players are coming in BPL. Our local cricketers will have a good opportunity to gain experience playing with them. In T20, you have to be involved in the game in such a manner that every moment is a challenge for them. This is a huge opportunity for the players who can’t adjust with T20 format. As the World Cup is coming up, we’re working on our T20 squad. This is a big opportunity for the youngsters too. If they play well, it’s better for the team,” Nannu said.

He said that the dew in BPL will be a big factor for the teams with the progress of the tournament, where the pace bowlers can play a vital role for the team’s success.

“We play a lot of matches in one ground and thus it’s tough to have a home and away format. In that case, we obviously want sporting wickets. Different venues can have different wickets so that players can adapt themselves,” he said.

“The weather will be cold and there will be fog in the night matches. However the wicket in night matches will be a bit different because of dew. Especially, it’ll be tough for the bowlers. The matches at day and night will be different. It’s important for our players to adapt themselves to these different conditions. The best performances will come from here,’’ he said, signing off.
