Bangladeshi expats in UAE start getting NID cards

DIPLOMATIC CORRESPONDENT, Dhaka
Bangladeshi expats in UAE start getting NID cards

After launching voter registration for Bangladeshi expatriates in Malaysia recently, the government has begun issuing identity cards for Bangladeshi expatriates in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The government has taken the initiative to issue national identity (NID) cards for expatriates living in different parts of the world.  It said the initiative would begin in other countries in phases.

Foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen launched the smart NID card and voter enrolment services at the Bangladesh embassy in Abu Dhabi yesterday (Monday).

He said the facility, being provided at the door-step of the expatriates, would reduce hassles for them.

Different digitised services, such as the 24-hour hotline, are being extended to Bangladeshi expatriates. These have been introduced at missions and ministries for the expatriates.

“The Smart NID card service was a long-felt need of Bangladesh nationals in the UAE. The NID smart card of the National Election Commission is of very high quality and ensures access to various services,” said the minister.

The Prime Minister has taken the initiative to expand the base of services to be provided to Bangladeshi expatriates, he added.

The foreign minister distributed smart NID Cards among five Bangladeshi expatriates. These were received from NEC officials.

It is the first ever distribution of smart NID cards among expatriates from a Bangladesh mission, he added.

Regarding different services of Bangladesh missions, the doreign ministry recently launched the Dutabash application, providing different services, Momen said

The minister encouraged Bangladeshi expatriates to send more remittance to Bangladesh as the government is providing lucrative incentives to remitters.

He highlighted the success stories of Bangladesh and the tremendous development that has taken place in the country.

He urged the expatriates to help in presenting a positive image about Bangladesh abroad.

He also urged Bangladesh nationals to actively participate in celebrating the birth centennial of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, to be held during 2020 and the 50th Anniversary of the Independence of Bangladesh.

The director general of NID Wing of the Election Commission, Brig. Gen. Mohammad Sidul Islam, and officials of the foreign ministry and the Bangladesh embassy in Abu Dhabi were present at the programme.

On November 5, the Election Commission launched the voter registration programme for Bangladeshi expatriates in Malaysia through video conference.

At that time, chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda said that expatriates living in the UK, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Maldives, Singapore would get smart NID cards in phases.
