Lawyer allegedly beats up female staff of BUP in broad daylight

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

A lawyer allegedly beat up a female staff member of the Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) in broad daylight in the capital’s Pallabi area. The accused, Jahirul Islam Khan Montu, is reported to be a lawyer of the Dhaka judge's court. He is a former general secretary of the Pallabi thana unit of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Victim Morrium Akter Taposi, a programme assistant of the BUP, sustained severe injuries as she was beaten with cricket bats, stumps, iron rods, and hockey sticks by Montu and his associates last Wednesday (November 13). Morrium is currently undergoing treatment at the Kurmitola General Hospital in Dhaka Cantonment. Family members of Morrium alleged that Montu had demanded Tk. 10 lakh as extortion money from her a month ago.
