Govt to see if any plot involved, says Hasina

Govt to see if any plot involved, says Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said the price hike of onion in the country is abnormal and the government will see if anybody is involved in any plot over this. The prime minister said a situation was created with onion in the country “but I don’t know why its price is jumping abnormally.” The price of this essential cooking ingredient spiraled in many other countries but its abnormal price hike in Bangladesh required to be examined, she said while opening the 3rd national council of Awami Swechchhasebak League (ASL) at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital yesterday.

“So we’ve to see whether anybody is involved in any plot (regarding the opinion),” the premier said. She also said onion-loaded cargo planes were expected to reach the country in next one or two days to contain its abnormal price hike while the government planned as well to review what actually caused the situation.

“I expect the cargo planes carrying onions to reach the country by

tomorrow or the day after tomorrow,” she said.

The premier said the price of onion was now also high in countries from where the government was importing this essential commodity.

“We have started importing onion by cargo planes so that the problem doesn’t exist,” she said.

It is natural that the production of a crop may increase or decrease due to weather, she said adding that there might be some people who want to make quick buck by raising the onion price through hoarding. “But they’ve to think that onion cannot be preserved for a long time…these might get perished.”

Hasina said there are efforts to dry the perished onion. “Then why are you giving this pain to people? We’ve to see who’re re the people behind this.” The Prime Minister alleged that when the country is advancing and people are living in peace, there are some vested quarters who are trying to confuse people by creating issues.”I’ll urge people not to get confused and find out the real reason.”

She said the onion pricein India is also very high and it is currently is selling there at Tk 100. “But there’s one state from where onion export is not allowed…the onion price in that state is lower.”
