Sports Reporter, Dhaka

Soumya Sarkar’s unbeaten scintillating 84 and Sumon Khan’s four-wicket haul provided Bangladesh a runaway victory when they routed visiting Hong Kong by comprehensive nine wickets on the opening day of the Group-B match in the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup-2019 at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Prothistan (BKSP) in Savar yesterday.

Bangladesh captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto invited his Hong Kong counterpart Aizaz Khan after winning the toss and restricted the visitors to 164 for nine in the stipulated 50 overs what the hosts comfortably hunt down in 24.1 overs, losing just a wicket. In the face of disciplined bowling attack of the local bowlers, the tourists started losing their wickets at regular intervals. Only five batsmen amid the tumbling could have managed to surpass their double figure mark.

Haroon Arshad among the players top-scored for Hong Kong with 35. He clubbed three boundaries and a six in 33-ball innings. The other batsmen-Aizaz Khan (25), KD Shah (24), Wajid Shah (17) and C McAuslan (14) contributed to the paltry total. Right-arm medium fast-bowler Somon Khan was the most successful bowler, who grabbed four wickets in his 10-overs, giving away just 33 runs to take his stakes. But Hasan Mahmud was economical more than Sumon as the former bled only 16 runs in 10 overs to claim one wicket. Medium pacer Soumya Sarkar also bowled 10 overs and conceded 36 runs but remained wicketless.

Bangladesh lost Mohammad Naim Sheikh in chase of the paltry target when Bangladesh were 94 for one. Opener Naim Sheikh, who returned home from India playing good cricket in T20 series that was his debut series in international arc, carried his purple form in this tournament as he belted a run-a-ball 52, laced with eight boundaries.

Soumya Sarkar, who also back home from India, put on the required runs with Nazmul Hossain Shanto without any trouble further. Shanto finished the innings in style when he blasted Raunaq Kapur for a towering six.

Soumya clouted 84 with the help of nine fours and three maximums in his unbeaten 74-ball knock. Captain Shanto thrashed a run-a-ball 22, clobbering two sixes to remain stranded at wickets. Ehsan Khan picked up the lone wicket for Hong Kong.
