Bangabandhu satellite likely to reach break-even in 9 years

Says BCSCL chairman Shahjahan Mahmood

Bangabandhu satellite likely to reach break-even in 9 years

The country’s first communication satellite, Bangabandhu-I, would reach the break-even point within nine years, said BCSCL Chairman Dr Shahjahan Mahmood yesterday.   The company is also set to sign deals to sell yet more 25 per cent bandwidth capacity of the satellite within the next couple of months, said BCSCL chairman.

It is set to earn Tk. 125 crore annually so far from the sale of 26 per cent of its total bandwidth, he added.    He was speaking yesterday at a press briefing at his office. "So, Bangabandhu-I can earn more than Tk. 200 crore a year by selling its remaining bandwidth capacity," he explained.

“We are mostly concentrating on the local market keeping in mind the huge demand inside the country. At the same time, we can also dig deeper into regional markets as well,” he said. The local market is much bigger than the primary estimation and has been growing at quite a high rate, he added.

The BCSCL has received Bangladesh Television as its first client, which is paying Tk. 18 crore annually to the company. The company will also earn Tk. 60 crore from other private television channels. In addition, it is also getting Tk. 4 crore from the  shipping and fisheries ministries.

Apart from this, it is receiving a certain amount from the direct-to-home (DTH) service of Beximco Communications Limited, said Mahmood. He, however, did not reveal the deal value. “We have done a very conservative calculation of the unsold capacity and estimated that it will take hardly nine years to recover the total cost of the Bangabandhu-I satellite,” said the BCSCL chairman.

The satellite was launched under a project involving Tk. 2,765 crore. The government is going to allow more nine television channels which will have to run their programmes using this satellite. This would enable the BCSCL to get an additional Tk. 15 crore. Besides, Mahmood said that they have started the process of launching Bangabanhdu-II. “An international consultant will be appointed within the next two or three months to run a feasibility study to ascertain the type of the second satellite that the government has promised to launch within its tenure by 2023,” he added.

Mahmood also said the first satellite launched by Bangladesh was a communication satellite, while the second one would be a hybrid satellite which would support weather forecast and ensure surveillance along with other activities. BCSCL managing director Shariar Ahmed Chowdhury and senior officials were also present at that briefing.
