Disciplined life stressed to prevent diabetes

Health experts and civil society members at a discussion yesterday stressed the leading disciplined life, conducting regular physical exercise and taking balanced food for preventing diabetes in every family. They expressed the views at the post- walkathon discussion arranged by Rangpur Diabetic Samity (RDS) on its office premises in the city in observance of the World Diabetes Day-2019.

The RDS jointly with the district administration chalked out programmes, including bringing out of the colourful walkathon, arranging free diabetic tests and discussion marking the day. Government officials, physicians, freedom fighters, educationists, business community leaders, socio-cultural activists, civil society members and local elite participated in the walkathon that paraded the main city streets.

Deputy Commissioner Md Asib Ahsan attended the discussion as the chief guest with Acting Vice-president of RDS Professor Dr Muhammad Rezaul Haq in the chair. General Secretary of RDS and noted Industrialist Mostafa Azad Chowdhury Babu discussed enormous importance of observance of the day and laid emphasis on creating mass public awareness about the silent killer disease of diabetes.

Head of the Department of Endocrinology of Rangpur Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) and renowned diabetic expert Prof Dr Abu Laik Ahmed Khan delivered speech as the main discussant. Formal Principal of Rangpur Medical College Prof Dr Md Abdur Rouf, Prof Dr Hedayetul Islam, Civil Surgeon Dr Hirombo Kumar Roy, Dr Md Mozaffar Ahmed, freedom fighter Jahangir Hossain, Awami League leaders Shamim Talukder and Tauhidur Rahman Tutul, Jatiya Party elder Azmal Hossain Lebu, among others, addressed.

In his speech, Professor Khan discussed the present national and global scenario of the spread of diabetes, complexities being caused by the disease and forwarded suggestions for way-outs of diabetes patients through leading a more disciplined life. “Most of the people are not sufficiently aware of severe risks of the silent killer disease of diabetes which gradually destroys the immune system of human body mutely leading toward death ultimately,” he said.
