Number of PEC, Ebtedayee examinees goes down by 2 lakh

Exams begin on Nov 17
STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

The number of examinees appearing for the upcoming Primary School Completion (PEC) examinations has dipped by more than two lakh compared to last year. The PEC examinations are scheduled to commence from November 17. This year, 2,553,267 examinees will be appearing for the PEC examinations. Of them, 1,181,300 are male and 1,371,967 female. Compared to the statistics from last year, 223,615 fewer examinees have registered.

The number of registrations for the Ebtedayee examinations, however, has increased by 30,983. A total of 350,371 examinees are set to take the Ebtedayee examinations. Of them, 187,082 are male and 163,289 female. State minister for primary

and mass education M Zakir Hossain provided the information while briefing journalists about the upcoming PEC and Ebtedayee examinations at his office in the Secretariat.

He said that a combined 2,903,638 examinees will be taking the PEC and Ebtedayee examinations at 7,470 centres at home and abroad. A total of 7,458 examination centres are located within the country.

Twelve overseas centres have been set up in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Libya, Greece, and Qatar for 615 examinees. Of the overseas examinees, 289 are male and 326 female.

The minister was optimistic about the increase in the number of female examinees vis-à-vis their male counterparts in the PEC and Ebtedayee examinations.

This year, there are 166,874 more female examinees than male, Hossain said. “It is encouraging that girls are moving ahead gradually,” he added.

In addition, 3,347 examinees with special needs will sit for the PEC examinations and 236 for the Ebtedayee examinations this year.

“Inclusive education is complementary to quality education. We have adopted a policy of ‘leaving no one behind’. Under this policy, education has become open to all, including students from the disadvantaged sections of society,” the minister said.

Hossain revealed that the authorities have completed all necessary preparations to hold the examinations in a fair manner. Special measures have been taken to send question papers to centres at the district and upazila levels. Question papers have also been sent to 184 inaccessible areas under special security arrangements.

The minister said that a zero-tolerance policy would be adopted against those deemed guilty of negligence of duty or irregularities. The ministry has set up a control room that can be reached at 02-9577257 by phone and  mopmesch2@gmail.com by email. The Directorate of Primary Education has set up a separate control room where examinees can make inquiries by calling 02-55074917, 01711344532, and 01712106369 and emailing ddestabdpe@gmail.com.

The PEC and Ebtedayee examinations are scheduled to continue until November 24. The PEC examinations were begun in 2009 with the aim of ensuring quality education.
