Former customs officer jailed over FF quota forgery

BSS, Dhaka

A court here yesterday sentenced a former officer of Customs, Excise & VAT Commissionerate, Dhaka (West) to a total of 16-year imprisonment for joining government service posing as children of Freedom Fighter. Judge Shahidul Islam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-7 passed the order, sentencing Md Moniruzzaman to a total of 16-year imprisonment under three separate sections of penal code. But the convict has to suffer only seven- year imprisonment as the sentence would run concurrently. The court held the trial in absentia and issued conviction warrant yesterday. “The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case against Moniruzzaman in 2015 for forgery and filed charge sheet in 2016. The court yesterday came up with the judgement after examining total 21 witnesses on different occasions,” public prosecutor Md Rezaul Karim Reza told BSS. The state counsel said the court in its observations said by posing as children of Freedom Fighter, Moniruzzaman has insulted the greatest sons and daughters of the soil. According to the case documents, the convict had used name and addresses of Freedom Fighter Abdul Samad through forgery and grabbed the government service.

Probe report in case over FR Tower fire Dec 11

BSS, Dhaka

A Dhaka court yesterday set December 11 to submit probe report in the case lodged over deadly inferno in FR Tower in capital’s Banani area on March 28 this year. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Devdas Chandra Adhikari set the date as investigation officer failed to submit the report yesterday. A total of 26 people were killed and 73 others were injured in the fire that quickly engulfed the 22-storey building on Road-17 at Kamal Ataturk Avenue area in Banani. Banani Police Box in-charge sub-inspector Milton Dutta filed the case on March 30 with Banani Police Station. Police made Tasvir Ul Islam, one of the owners of FR Tower, SMHI Faruque, the land owner of the building, and Rupayan Group chairman Liyakat Ali Khan Mukul, accused in the case. They have been blamed for collusion in causing loss of lives and properties with evil intention, causing loss of lives, severe injuries and damage to properties in fire caused by severe negligence, in the case.

Indictment hearing in Barapukuria graft case Jan 15

BSS, Dhaka

A court here yesterday set January 15 to hold hearing on charge framing in Barapukuria coalmine graft case against BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and others. Yesterday was fixed for holding hearing on the matter, but Judge AHM Ruhul Imran of Dhaka Special Judge Court-2 had to reset the date as the jail authorities could not produce prime accused Begum Khaleda Zia before the temporary court raised in newly constructed building in front of Keraniganj Central Jail. Khaleda is now undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on February 26, 2008, filed the graft case against Khaleda Zia and 15 others with Shahbagh Police Station in the capital. They were accused of causing a loss of Taka 159 crore to the state exchequer by awarding a contract for operation of Barapukuria Coalmine to a Chinese company through abuse of power. Of the 16 accused, six are already dead and their names are expected to be dropped from the case while framing of the charges. The High Court on February 25, 2019, ordered the lower court concerned to dispose of the case within six months.
