VC’s removal

Protesters resume demonstration at JU

OUR Correspondent, JU

Teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University resumed their protest programme on the campus yesterday. They had postponed their protest due to bad weather. They have been organising the protest for the removal of VC Professor Farzana Islam over the allegation of corruption. The protesters arranged a solidarity rally in front of the old registrar building to press home their demands at around 4:00 pm where many eminent persons from the city came to extend their support to the protesters.

Addressing the rally, comrade Khalequzzaman, convener of BSD said, “The government, UGC and the ministry are concerned about the corruption on this development project. When the conversation of top BCL leaders came into the public, many media outlets published several reports about VC’s corruption. Even though the government is concerned about all this, they still cannot form an investigation body. UGC, education ministry and the government are yet to take any decision against the VC.”

“Only Tk 4 crore was allocated for research of this university but BCL leaders demanded TK 86 crore from the project (6 per cent of allocated money),” he added.

Blaming the VC and the government for this situation, Professor Anu Muhammad of Economics department said, “At the beginning, we demanded the formation of an investigation body but the VC rejected our demands.”

Quoting the PM’s speech, he said, “The PM’s speech would encourage the corrupt persons; the PM has said that the government will stop funding of public university but public universities are running by public money, so the government has no rights to stop it.”

Expressing solidarity, Nurul Haque Nur, VP of DUCSU said, “We condemn the BCL attack on protesting teachers and students.”

Among others, Prof Dr Mozammal Haqe, chief coordinator of Ganasanghati Andalan, Junaid Saki, general secretary of Socialist Student Front, Nasir Uddin Prince, vice president of BSU JU unit, Oliur Sun, president of Chhatra Front, of JU unit, and Mahtir Mohammad addressed at the solidarity porgramme. Earlier, the protestors brought out a protest procession on the campus showing the scroll photography (Potchitra) at around 11 am.

The protesters will bring out a protest procession today (Wednesday) at around 10 am on the campus.

On the other hand, protesting teachers and students on Monday alleged that police allegedly harassed them.

They alleged that their family members are getting threats from the local police station for their involvement with the anti-VC movement and the university administration is trying to divert the movement by harassing them mentally with different law enforcing agencies.
