Why are so many train accidents now?

Why are so many train accidents now?

The nation is extremely shocked to witness yet another tragic train accident. It is rather very scary that at a time when modern technology is making the railway system almost accident-free in many countries, in Bangladesh fatal train accidents have now become common with regular frequency. When even head-on collision between buses on the highways is becoming rare, we have this yesterday’s ghastly accident when two express trains, one Turna-Nishitha and the Udayon, hit each other face-to-face and got mangled.

The initial report confirmed 16 deaths in the accident with hospital sources pointing out the number could be more. After primary inquiry, it was found that as the locomaster of Turna-Nishitha ignored the signal, the accident took place. If this finally comes out true, then we have reason to believe that  people who are responsible for running a train between destinations are not fit or are not adequately trained to do their job.

It was not long ago, on October 3, the locomaster of a local train was suspended as he hit standing coaches with very high speed at Kaunia Junction killing one person. For a train accident, derailment is the most frequent cause in Bangladesh. One such accident killed five people when it was crossing a bridge at Moulvibazar on June 24.

The list of train accidents is getting longer. Like most countries, passengers in Bangladesh used to take a train as the safest mode of transport despite the fact train tickets nowadays have become a little costlier than before. If fatal accidents take place one after another they would not prefer a train for journey. In that case, Bangladesh railway which is a hugely losing concern in terms of revenue income will have no chance of becoming a solvent national entity any time soon.

After yesterday’s accident, the relevant authorities quickly allocated some money for the victims. While this is appreciated, no amount of money can heal the wound of those who have lost their closed ones. It is heart wrenching to hear that a family lost mother in yesterday’s train accident while returning after burying father who died in an accident at a ship-breaking yard. No word of solace is enough for this family and others who have lost their near and dear ones in yesterday’s tragedy.
