Derogatory remarks on Noor Hossain

Ranga should apologise or quit politics, say AL leaders

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

Awami League (AL) leaders yesterday criticised Jatiya Party secretary general Moshiur Rahman Ranga and urged him to apologise to the nation for his derogatory remarks on Shaheed Noor Hossain, who sacrificed his life for restoring democracy in the country. They described Ranga as "mentally sick" and said he should quit politics if he does not apologise to the nation.

On Sunday, Ranga claimed that Shaheed Noor Hossain was addicted to drugs, like yaba pills and phensedyl. Ranga said this at a discussion to mark "Democracy Day" by JaPa Dhaka city north at the Banani party office. “Whom did Hussain Muhammad Ershad kill? Noor Hossain. Who was Noor Hossain? He was an addict," he added. Ranga said this in the presence of JaPa chairman GM Quader and other senior leaders.

Noor Hossain was killed when the police fired on a pro-democracy procession near Zero Point in the city on November 10, 1987. The procession was taken out in protest against the autocratic regime of Ershad.

Talking to this correspondent,  AL presidium member Mohammad Nasim came down heavily on the JP secretary general for his remarks.

“People from all walks of life respect Noor Hossain for his sacrifice, but the statement made by Ranga against him is very unfortunate and derogatory. I doubt he made the comments consciously,” he said.

When contacted, AL joint  general secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak said Noor Hossain is a symbol of democracy. Noor had fought to restore democracy. but the JP leader made a bad statement against him, he said.
