Scenario of nursing in the world

Scenario of nursing in the world

Genesis of nursing is as old as humanity. The nurturing instinct, the core of nursing, started with motherhood. As a service to sick persons it flourished in the home care of Hakims, local medical persons, in monasteries and in missionary hospitals. As a labor it was forced on the prisoners by the kings to attend the wounded soldiers. Nursing as a profession had its origin in modern era with the advent of nursing training by the schools of nursing. Florence Nightingale’s contribution to shape it as the service oriented profession is commendable

Today nursing is a profession within the health care sector focused on the care of individuals, families, and communities so they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal health and quality of life.

Nurses may be differentiated from other health care providers by their approach to patient care, training, and scope of practice. Nurses practice in many specialties with differing levels of prescription authority. Many nurses provide care within the ordering scope of physicians, and this traditional role has shaped the public image of nurses as care providers.

Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings. Nursing includes the promotion of health, the care of ill, disabled and dying people. Advocacy, promotion of a safe environment, research, participation in shaping health policy and health systems management, and education are also key nursing roles.

Nursing education and administration

Nursing education does not reinforce specialized nursing knowledge; rather, it simply conveys medical knowledge. Care knowledge is not reinforced (Board of Directors member, INO) There are insufficient efforts to prepare nurses for their job. On the other hand Nursing Training schools multiplied without college and hostel building, with very less or no stipend for nursing student and less promotional opportunities for teachers. There is a marked interference of non-nursing personnel in nursing administration and there are no written nursing policies or manuals.

Nursing practice

Status of nursing in society is an issue still persisting in the different communities of the world.

Some the major issues in nursing practice are: -

Nurse patient ratio in different levels of health care.

Noninvolvement of nurses in nursing matters.

Poor pay structures, Lack of security and safety.

Less promotional opportunities and inadequate supplies

Apart from these issues, nursing is a particularly stressful profession, and nurses consistently identify stress as a major work-related concern and have among the highest levels of occupational stress when compared to other professions. This stress is caused by the environment, psychosocial stressors, and the demands of nursing, including new technology that must be mastered, the emotional labor involved in nursing, physical labor, shift work, and high workload.

This stress puts nurses at risk for short-term and long-term health problems, including sleep disorders, depression, mortality, psychiatric disorders, stress-related illnesses, and illness in general. Nurses are at risk of developing compassion fatigue and moral distress, which can worsen mental health. They also have very high rates of occupational burnout (40%) and emotional exhaustion (43.2%).

There are a number of interventions that can mitigate the occupational hazards of nursing. They can be individual-focused or organization-focused. Individual-focused interventions include stress management programs, which can be customized to individuals. Stress management programs can reduce anxiety, sleep disorders, and other symptoms of stress.

Organizational interventions focus on reducing stressful aspects of the work environment by defining stressful characteristics and developing solutions to them. Using organizational and individual interventions together is most effective at reducing stress on nurses.

The biggest problem is that every society needs more nurses than it has at once .  Where to get these nurses?  How to bring in enough help to get healthcare back up to the quality nursing standards?  It is a question every nursing school and nursing employer would like an answer to.

On the positivee note, there is another side of nursing over the past few years, there has been another influx of new specializations, career paths and degree programs to meet the needs of a changing world.

Nursing in future

Nursing technology has transformed the way nurses work and continues to evolve, along with the roles that nurses play in today’s health care arena. According to various studies and surveys, technology in the nursing world has increased patient satisfaction and overall outcomes, reduced clinical errors and decreased the amount of paperwork that nurses were once required to perform.

The outlook for new technology in nursing remains robust, as new devices, computers and robots aim to transform the future of health care.

The nurturing nature of the nurse prevails over the robots in caring for the sick humanity.
