Significance of Eid-e-Miladunnabi

THE SUNNAH IS CONSIDERED A MODEL OF EMULATION FOR PIOUS MUSLIMS AND HAS TO A GREAT DEGREE INFLUENCED THE MUSLIM CULTURE
Significance of
Eid-e-Miladunnabi

Today Muslims are observing Eid-e-Miladunnabi – one of the most momentous occasions for Muslims worldwide. The day is dedicated to the Prophet and the spirit of Islam. But, Eid-e-Miladunnabi is a day to celebrate as well as to mourn because it is also the death anniversary of the Prophet.

Eid-e-Miladunnabi is a day for solemn reflection, an occasion to ponder upon the unfathomable depth of the Prophet’s teachings -- teachings that are more pertinent today than ever before. It is also an opportunity to study his life, an approach that would serve as the model for all future Muslims -- embodying all the virtues required to be, first and foremost, a principled, dignified, and pious human being.

The influences of the Prophet’s teaching will always be relevant for humankind.  Islam makes up about one fourth of the population of the planet and is the fastest growing religion in the world. This is a testament to the egalitarian belief system of Islam -- at its core, it teaches that all human beings, rich or poor, young or old, are equal, and deserve to be treated with the same respect afforded to any other.

Always a public holiday in Bangladesh, the government  as well as various religious, socio-political and cultural organisations, chalk out programmes in the capital and elsewhere in the country marking the day. Different Islamic organisations take out peaceful processions carrying banners inscribed with 'Kalema Taiyyeba' in the capital Dhaka as elsewhere across the country and arrange competitions on the Quran recitation and exhibitions of religious books. Islamic Foundation Bangladesh makes it a point to organise various programmes highlighting the significance of the day.

The Sunnah is considered a model of emulation for pious Muslims and has to a great degree influenced the Muslim culture. The greeting that Muhammad taught Muslims to offer each other, "may peace be upon you" (Arabic: as-salamu `alaykum) is used by Muslims throughout the world. Many details of major Islamic rituals such as daily prayers, the fasting and the annual pilgrimage are only found in the Sunnah.

On this day Muslims gather for the hearing of Sira (Life) of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and distribute food to people and bring happiness to the Ummah. The basic purpose of celebrating Eid-e-Miladunnabi or gathering is an effective and efficient means for the calling of people to Islam and educate children about the teachings of Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).  The day also remind the Muslims about the Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) character, his way of worshipping, and his way of treating people.
