AL to hold pending sessions by Dec 10

Dates for 27 organisational districts out of 75 set so far

AL to hold pending
sessions by Dec 10

The Awami League's (AL's) central leaders are spending busy hours to complete pending council sessions of its district, upazila and thana units, ahead of the party's 21st national council session, scheduled to be held on December 20-21. The leaders are working hard to complete the pending district council sessions by December 10, as stipulated by the AL president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

But party insiders said the present central committee would not be able to complete 75 district council sessions within the deadline, as they have only 40 days in hand.

Party sources said the current central committee of the AL has so far been able to hold only three districts council sessions, out of the total 78 organisational districts, in the last three years. The present committee was formed through the party’s triennial national council session held on October 22–23 in 2016.

At a meeting at Ganabhaban last month, AL president Sheikh Hasina

expressed her annoyance over her party’s central leaders for failing to hold pending district council sessions. She directed them to complete pending council sessions of all AL units within December 10. After the party chief’s instructions, AL leaders, led by party general secretary Obaidul Quader, fanned out across the country to implement her directives.

However, according to party sources, the party has so far announced the date of council sessions for 27 districts out of the total 78.

AL insiders said the party will first hold district council sessions whose tenures expired six to seven years ago and then  gradually complete council sessions for other districts.

Talking to this correspondent, AL joint general secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak said they are trying to complete pending district council sessions by December 10 in keeping with the party president’s instructions. “We have announced council dates for all districts of Rajshahi division. We are trying… and I hope we can complete council sessions in most of the districts within the stipulated time,” he added.

Replying to a question, Nanak said: “The present committee has not got enough time to complete council sessions for all 78 organisational districts, as we had to make preparations for the 11th parliamentary elections, five city corporation, and other local body polls in the last three years. Besides, we have made several organisational tours to make the party stronger. So, it can’t be said that the present committee failed to do so.”

When contacted, AL organising secretary BM Mozammel Haque told The Independent on Monday that the pending council sessions of seven districts of Rangpur division will be completed by December 10, as the date of these council sessions have already been announced.

“I can’t say about the other districts, or whether all 78 district council sessions will be completed by the deadline,” he said.

AL office secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap said they are busy making preparations for holding pending district council sessions. “First of all, we will complete council sessions in those districts where tenures expired 6-7 years ago, and then gradually other districts,” he added.

Talking on the issue on yesterday (Thursday), the AL general secretary said they have started to hold pending council sessions of districts and other units of the party in full swing.

Replying to a question of this correspondent, Quader said: “We will hold as many district council sessions as we can ahead of the party’s national council session. We will not hold council sessions in those districts where the tenure expired recently… we will hold council sessions in those districts where tenures expired five to seven years ago.”

The AL general secretary also said the present committee has given at least 30 full-fledged committees for different units of the party, something the past committee could not do.

It is not correct that the present committee has just held three district council sessions in its three-year tenure, he claimed without mentioning actual figures.

However, the party has made elaborate preparations to hold its 21st national council session in time in a befitting manner. The two-day session will be held at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the city.
