Illegal structures pulled down in capital

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) yesterday launched a drive to remove illegal structures occupying the streets and pavements in Karwan Bazar, the largest kitchen market in the capital. Some 165 makeshift shops and structures were removed from the commercial area. Executive Magistrate Md Masud Hossain led the mobile courts in the area. During the drive, an official team of the city corporation demolished illegal pavement portions along the poultry market, kathpatti, and kitchen market areas on charge of encroaching the footpaths. Talking to the journalists, Magistrate Masud said the drive will only end when all streets and walkways in Karwan Bazar area under the city corporation are cleared of illegal occupation. On Saturday last, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan told The Independent that the government took a decision to set up a police outpost at Karwan Bazar to foil rampant extortion and illegal activities. “A process is already underway to set up a police outpost there,” Khan said. On September 26 last, the DNCC launched a drive to remove illegal structures occupying the streets and pavements in Karwan Bazar and Khilkhet areas.

Some 350 makeshift shops and structures were evicted from Karwan Bazar, while some 600 makeshift structures were removed from the Khilkhet area during the drive. DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam on the same day announced that steps were taken to set up a police outpost in the city’s Karwan Bazar area to free the roads and footpaths from the clutches of illegal occupants.
