Assaulted BIWTA woman engr appeals to PM for justice

SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT, Dhaka

The female superintendent engineer of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), who was allegedly assaulted by two Jubo League leaders in the BIWTA’s Motijheel office on Thursday, has made an appeal to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for justice. Rakib, vice-president of the Jubo League Motijheel unit, slapped the engineer several times and shoved her on to the floor in additional chief engineer Nesar Uddin Khan’s office in the presence of others. The victim, Zarina Khanom, provided her account of the incident while speaking with The Independent at her office yesterday (Monday). Describing her humiliation, Zarina recounted that Nesar, Rakib and Sagor had been putting pressure on her to sign and release the file of RR Enterprise despite anomalies in the situation. BIWTA employees have since called for the cancellation of RR Enterprise’s licence. They also made demands for safety and security at the workplace.

On the day of the incident, Nesar Uddin called Zarina to his office where Rakib and Sagor were already present, she said, adding that Nesar Uddin started shouting at her to release the file immediately. Zarina protested that the file could not be released without proper verification. At one stage, Rakib, who is also the owner of RR Enterprise, became involved in an altercation with Zarina. He started slapping her in front of Nesar Uddin. Zarina claimed her boss Nesar Uddin did not try to protect her from the beating.

“Our Prime Minister is a woman. So, I appeal that she ensure justice and set exemplary punishment so that no female official is humiliated in her office,” Zarina said in a choked voice. The BIWTA has filed a case with Motijheel police station over the incident against Sagor and Rakib, both former Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders who now hold the posts of president and vice-president of the Jubo League’s Motijheel unit respectively.  The officers’ association of the BIWTA yesterday (Monday) held an emergency meeting chaired by Abdul Awal, president of the association. Zarina stated the details of the incident at the meeting and sought justice. Nesar Uddin Khan also presented his statement at the meeting. Awal assured the victim of justice following a thorough investigation.  Siddiqur Rahman, BIWTA’s director (accounts), is investigating the matter.
