2 BCL men held over stabbing RU student

OUR CORRESPONDNET, RU

Police arrested two activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), a student wing of ruling party, yesterday for their alleged involvement in mugging and injuring a Rajshahi University (RU) student on the campus. The arrestees were identified as suspended BCL activist Anik Mahmud Bony and Rajshahi College BCL leader Mostifizur Rahman Mithu. However, Bony is allegedly involved in many offences and crimes on the campus.

Meanwhile, law enforcers claimed to have detained five people along with the two BCL men—Rubel Hossain, Rifat Hossain Rakesh and Parvez—from Rajshahi in connection with the mugging and injuring Firoz, said Officer-in-Charge of Motihar Police Station Hafizur Rahman.

Firoz Anam, a first-year student of economics department of the university, was stabbed allegedly by muggers on the campus on Friday night. Firoz and his friend were standing in front of a photocopy store near the stadium when a few youths called him to a field near Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall around 7:45pm on Friday. They then tried to snatch money and mobile phone of Firoz and his friend. As Firoz started shouting, the miscreants stabbed him on the head and his leg and left the scene, leaving him critically injured.

Later, students rushed him to the university medical centre from where he was referred to RMCH. The injured student was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital. Protesting the incident, students of the university blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway in front of the university main entrance at 9:50pm on Friday demanding immediate arrest of the attackers. After getting assurance to take action from university authority for ensuring safety, agitated students postponed demonstration programme till October 24.
