Senior MPs embarrased

Bangladesh Open University yesterday has cancelled all registrations and examinations of Tamanna Nusrat Bubli, a ruling party lawmaker, as she was found to have hired proxies to sit for BA examinations on her behalf. Professor Habibur Rahman Akand, Principal of Narsingdi Government College told the media adding that a three-member investigation committee was formed to investigate into the matter. Moreover, the college authorities have decided to serve a show cause notice on female MP as to why it will not take punitive measures against her for cheating. Earlier, a proxy examinee for a Bubli was expelled after getting caught in Narsingdi on Saturday. The incident

took place at the Narsingdi Government College centre. According to the official sources in the Narsingdi Government College, Asha took part in a Bachelor of Arts (BA) examination on behalf of Bubli. Lawmaker Bubli filled in her BA examination form under Bangladesh Open University for which she hired a female student named Asha for taking part in the examinations on her behalf.

Narsingdi Government College authority after examining her admission papers found that Asha was a sham examinee.

The college authority later expelled her.

Meanwhile, senior members of Parliament are feeling embarrassed over the alleged forgery committed by Bubli to undertake her BA examination.

Though the MPs termed the incident as a criminal and punishable offence, they could not make it clear whether she would lose her parliamentary membership for this act.

The senior lawmakers further said that the ruling party lawmaker who represents Narsingdi under seat #24 reserved for women has tarnished the image and dignity of Parliament as well as the lawmakers.

A senior lawyer of the Supreme Court suggested the authorities to amend the existing law incorporating a provision to expel a lawmaker for this type of immoral acts.

Advocate Abdul Matin Khosru, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee of the ministry of law, justice and parliamentary affairs, termed the act as a criminal offence.

“She (Bubli) has tarnished the image and dignity of parliament and representatives of the people,” he added.

Another senior lawmaker, preferring anonymity, said she felt embarrassed with the incident and said Bubli did not do a good job. If any case is filed against her and she is accused and punished, the Speaker then has to take up the case to investigate the gravity of the offence and take measures on the light of the investigation, she added.

Senior lawyer advocate Monjil Morshed said the existing law does not make it clear whether a lawmaker would lose his/her parliamentary membership for such an offence.

“That’s why the existing law should be amended to take measures if any lawmaker is involved in such immoral and criminal activity,” he added.
