No industry in Sonadia, says PM

UNB, Dhaka

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday asked all concerned not to establish any industry in Sonadia for ensuring the development of ecotourism in the island of Cox's Bazar. The prime minister said this while witnessing a power-point presentation on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar (Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Industrial City) at her office. Prime Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the event. He said Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA) made the presentation on various aspects of the industrial city. The press secretary said the prime minister witnessed the presentation and gave some instructions over the industrial city. Sheikh Hasina asked BEZA to take into consideration the housing of workers as well as the issues of both industrial and IT sector waste management and the environment there. She also directed them to take necessary steps to protect the city from natural disasters like tidal surge and cyclone. Prime Minister’s Private Industry and Investment Adviser Salman F Rahman and officials concerned were present. BEZA is developing ‘Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar (BSMSN)’ in the country’s southeastern part with a view to encouraging rapid economic development through diversification of industry, production, export and employment. The industrial city is being developed on around 30,000 acres of land encompassing three upazilas — Mirsarai, Sitakundu and Sonagazi — under Chattogram and Feni districts respectively covering 25 kilometres of coastlines of Sandeep channel of the Bay of Bengal.
