Assaulting BIWTA engineer reprehensible

Assaulting BIWTA engineer reprehensible

It is very surprising to note that a Bangladesh Chhatra League activist of Jagannath University physically assaulted a female superintendent engineer of BIWTA at its Motijheel office in the capital on Thursday. According to the description of the event that appeared in this newspaper the following day, the student activist, one Rakib, slapped Zarina Khanom, the superintendent engineer inside the office of Additional Chief Engineer (Marine and Mechanical Engineering) Nesar Uddin.

The act is as outrageous as it is reprehensible. The sheer audacity of physically assaulting a government official and a lady official at that almost defies belief.  That this outrageous act took place in the BIWTA office premises shows that the perpetrator believed him to be immune from judicial action. No one should be allowed to get away after intimidating and official in any manner.

This case of assault on Zarina Khanom must be taken very seriously and the offender must be taken to task so that employees in general and women employees in particular feel free to work at their offices. The relevant people in the authorities must ensure gender friendly working environment everywhere.

What the alleged student political activist was doing there on the day? The assaulter with his associate went to Additional Chief Engineer’s room and urged him to exert pressure on Khanom to release a bill-related file immediately. As she refused to do so without checking the bill, she was manhandled. She was slapped so hard that she fell on the floor. So quite clearly it was the honesty and integrity of the official in question that provoked the activist into this heinous action.

After this event, the BIWTA has temporarily suspended Nesar Uddin and formed a probe committee.  Allegedly, Nesar Uddin embezzled Tk 18 crore from the project.

The concerned person involved in this criminal act must face the music. No crime should go unpunished, regardless of the offender’s political affiliation. Getting involved in student politics has become, for many, synonymous with earning money through illegal means. These self serving people need to be weeded out from all organisations.
