Betel nut growers are busy selling their produce in Datterhat under Sadar upazila here.

Some growers say there has been a bumper betel nut production. Good demand for betel nuts is translating into handsome profits, they add. Nur Uddin, a local betel nut grower, said betel nuts are harvested during the Bengali months Ashwin–Kartik (October to November). "We are happy with the sale. We have earned a good amount this year," he added.  The growers say that rain is not good for betel nuts.

Another betel nut grower, Monir Ahmed, who came from Binodpur, said they had got lower prices for their produce last year due to the interference of some middlemen in the retail market. "But this year, we haven't had maintained any contact with middlemen. We are directly selling betel nuts to traders and customers. And we hope to earn good profit till November," he added.

A good number of betel nut growers, retailers and wholesalers have started coming to markets in Dattarhat. Munsor, yet another betel nut grower, said: "After meeting our demands, the excess betel nuts have been put on sale here in local markets. Eighty pieces of high-quality betel nut are sold for Tk. 180–185. Last year, they sold for Tk. 110–130. The high prices have made the growers happy this year."

Md Hossain, a wholesaler, said: "I collected nearly 20 tonnes today for supplying them to Dhaka."

A middleman came from Feni to get betel nuts at a cheaper rate. He said the quality of betel nuts in Noakhali is than in other districts like Pirojpur and Khulna. BADC sources say nearly 460 hectares had been brought under betel nut cultivation last year. But this year, 389 hectares have been brought under betel nut cultivation.  DEA sources say after meeting local demands, betel nuts are exported to Middle Eastern countries.
