Swechchhasebak League council

Aspirants call for dedicated, honest leaders in committee

Incumbent president, secretary likely to lose posts

The triennial council session of the Awami Swechchhasebak League, an associate organisation of the Awami League (AL), is going to be held on November 16 after seven years. The last session was held in 2012. Aspirants called upon the AL president and organisational chief of the Swechchhasebak League, Sheikh Hasina, to include those who are honest, dedicated, committed and deprived leaders of the party in the new committee in the ensuing session. They also called upon their chief to drop corrupt leaders and induct fresh blood.

The Awami Swechchhasebak League started its journey in 1997 with a convening committee, led by Mokbul Hossain and Habibur Rahman Habib.

The first council session of the organisation was held in 2003, where AFM Bahauddin Nasim and Pankaj Debnath were made president and general secretary, respectively. Last month, AL high-ups decided to hold council sessions of its four associate bodies, after some top leaders of these organisations were found involved in various irregularities, including running casino business in the capital.

The alleged involvement of Swechchhasebak League incumbent president, Mollah Mohammad Abu Kawser, in running casino business in the capital was revealed before the media after law enforcers started its drive against

corruption and illegal activities on September 18.

Party insiders said the performance of the organisation’s president and secretary was not good, and they became involved in various irregularities in the past seven years. They also apprehended that the two might lose their posts in the coming council sessions.

Insiders said Mollah Mohammad Abu Kawser was involved in irregularities, including running casino business in the capital, while Pankaj Debnath has been in the general secretary's post since 2003. So, they might be replaced.

When contacted, Swechchhasebak League joint general secretary, Gazi Mesbaul Hossain Shachchu, said: “As far as I know, our party chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will give a chance to young leadership this time.

Pankaj Debnath has been in his post in the past 16 years. So, I think the changes may be made in the president and secretary posts in the coming council session.”

He also called upon the organisational chief Sheikh Hasina to induct honest and dedicated people in the new committee, and oust those who have tarnished the party and government's image by indulging in illegal activities.  Talking

to this correspondent, the organisation’s vice-president, Nirmal Ranjan Guha, said the party high-ups should induct fresh, honest and dedicated leaders in the new committee.

“As our party chief has started a drive to root out corrupt and dishonest leaders, as well as infiltrators, from the party and its associate bodies, I will request our leader not to induct such people in the new committee,” said Guha, who is also an aspirant for the post of president of the organisation.

About the performance of the incumbent president and secretary, he said: “It’s up to our leader (Hasina) to decide whether they performed well or not in the past seven years. It should not be wise to say something against them. I just want to say that our leader should choose the right people for right posts in the new committee.”

Guha, who is also convener of the preparation committee of holding the November 16 council session, said they would hold the session in a befitting manner in the city’s Suhrawardy Udyan.

Several aspirants came up with the same statements while speaking to The Independent.

When contacted, former Swechchhasebak League president and AL organising secretary, Bahauddin Nasim, said: “Those who are involved in corruption and other illegal activities will not be made leaders of the organisation. Those who are honest, dedicated, committed and have good organising capacity, will be given a chance in the new committee.”

Hectic lobbying

A section of former Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders are aspirants for different posts of the organisation. They have started hectic lobbying with the AL’s influential leaders for better posts in the associate body in the coming council session.

The Swechchhasebak League’s joint general secretary,

Gazi Mesbaul Hossain Shachchu, its senior vice-president, Nirmal Ranjan Guha, vice-president Motiur Rahman Moti, information and research secretary, Moyazzem Hossain, organising secretary Khairul Hassan Juel, BCL former leaders, Sohel Rana Tipu, Sazzad Shakib Badsha and Abdul

Alim Baperi are in the discussion for key  posts of the

organisation.
