3 neo-JMB men held in capital

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

Three members of the neo-JMB, an offshoot of the banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), were arrested from the Gabtoli area in the capital on Wednesday evening. The trio—Md Abdullah, 24, Shafikul Islam alias Mollaji, 38, and Musatafa Hosen Arif, 25—were arrested around 8:30pm, said  DMP (media) deputy commissioner Masudur Rahman

The DMP yesterday said that the new faction of the banned militant outfit is planning sabotage in Dhaka. Acting on a tip-off that the militants were coming to Dhaka from a northern district by a bus to carry out anti-national and anti-government activities, a team of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit conducted a drive in the area and nabbed them.

During primary interrogation, the militants told the police that they were JMB members who got initiated in the neo-JMB through Sohail Mahfouz, a defendant in multiple cases, including the Gulshan Holey Artisan case.

It was found that they used to communicate with each other through various encrypted apps. A CTTC press release claims that the militants also confessed to planning sabotage against the government and the state. The militants said they had joined the neo-JMB at a meeting at Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital at the end of 2017 through Mohsin and Badrul. Other names also came up during the interrogation.
