Female BIWTA engr assaulted in office

SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT, Dhaka

A female superintendent engineer of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) was physically assaulted allegedly by a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader of Jagannath University at the BIWTA’s Motijheel office in the capital. BCL leader Rakib slapped Zarina Khanom inside the office of Additional Chief Engineer (Marine and Mechanical Engineering) Nesar Uddin. The incident took place at around 4:30pm.

While the BIWTA has temporarily suspended Nesar Uddin, a probe committee, headed by BIWTA Director (Audit) Siddiqur Rahman, has been formed to look into the incident. BIWTA chairman Commodore M Mahbub-ul Islam confirmed the details to The Independent yesterday. A case has also been filed with the Motijheel police station in this regard.

According to the sources concerned, Rakib and his associate Raihan entered Nesar’s room and called him to create pressure on Zarina to release a bill-related file immediately. But Zarina refused to release the file without carrying out the necessary checks.

However, Nesar, Rakib, and Raihan demanded that she okay the file instantly. At one stage, Rakib slapped the engineer so hard that she fell to the floor. When asked, Nesar insisted that Rakib and Raihan had put pressure on Zarina.

“The matter is regrettable. We are investigating the incident and a probe committee has been formed,” the BIWTA chairman said. Terming the incident a criminal offence, Commodore M Mahbub-ul Islam said, “The committee will enquire as to why the outsiders were in Nesar’s room and why the female engineer was physically assault.” Engineer Zarina remains traumatised after the incident, the BIWTA chairman added.

When contacted by The Independent over the incident, Al Nahian Khan Joy, acting central president of the BCL said, “If any of our leaders or activists is involved in this incident, we will take strong punitive action against him. We are requesting the authorities concerned to give us some evidence like photo or video footage regarding Rakib, the accused leader.” Sources in the BIWTA allege that Nesar had embezzled at least Tk. 18 crore in the name of various purchases and other purposes.

BIWTA insiders also said the truth will be unearthed once Nesar is investigated by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
