Students of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) in Gopalganj continued their protests on the campus yesterday for the fifth consecutive day at a time when power and water connections to the dormitories are still snapped. Meanwhile, a good number of teachers joined them, extending their support to the students and demanding the resignation of the vice-chancellor (VC), Prof. Khondoker Nasiruddin, for his alleged involvement in corruption and irregularities.

Some students have also been on an indefinite hunger-strike in front of the administrative building since Thursday to press their one-point demand.

On Saturday, the authorities declared a

10-day holiday ahead of Durga Puja and

asked the students to vacate the dormitories by 10am. The students, however, refused to leave the halls and vowed to continue the protests.

The university authorities then

snapped power and water connections to

the dormitories and shut the dining halls to quell their movement, causing immense suffering for its residents, complained Shums Jabin, one of the protesters. He, however,

said they would continue their protests

until the VC steps down from his post.

The Independent tried several times to get in touch with the VC, but he could not be reached.

The university authorities have formed a three-member committee, led by Science faculty Dean Prof. Md Abdur Rahman, to probe the recent attacks on students.

The agitating students came under attack on Saturday, allegedly by supporters of the VC, as they were on their way to the university from Gopalganj town. At least 20 students were injured.

The two other committee members are Assistant Professor Arefin Shamsul and Law faculty Dean Prof. Kuddus Miah.

Condemning the attacks on the protesting students and demanding the resignation of the VC, Prof. Khondoker Nasiruddin, former and incumbent students demonstrated on the campuses, including at Dhaka University (DU), and demanded the VC’s resignation.

In DU, around 100 former students of BSMRSTU formed a human chain around noon at the base of Raju Sculpture. In Chittagong University (CU), students under the banner of ‘General Students of CU’ also formed a human chain in front of the university’s Shaheed Minar premises.

Students of Jagannath University and Barishal University also demonstrated to press for a similar charter of demands.
