Another Juba League leader, Golam Kibria Shamim, was arrested from the capital yesterday with Tk 1.80 crore in cash, fixed deposit receipt (FDR) cheques worth Tk. 165 crore, eight firearms and a large cache of foreign liquors. During a drive at his office in the afternoon, GKB & Company Pvt Limited, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) also arrested seven of his bodyguards. In another raid at Kalabagan Krira Chakra later, RAB detained five persons including the club president, Shafiqul Alam.

The four others – Hafizul Islam, Harun, Anwar and Lition Mia – are office staff, RAB-2 Commanding Officer Ashik Billah told the media. They were detained around 1pm when they came out of the office for offering Jum’a prayers. Rab personnel asked them some questions and took them away in a car. Firoz is a former member of Krishak League’s central committee. During the raid, Rab said they recovered coins used in gambling, 572 packets of cards, a foreign-made pistol, bullets and yellow-coloured yaba pills.

RAB conducted the drives only two days after the arrest of another influential Juba League leader, Khaled Mahmud Bhuiyan, for running an illegal casino at a football club.

On Wednesday, the RAB arrested Khalid Mahmud Bhuiyan, who is also president of the Fakirerpool Youngmen’s Club, from Gulshan area for running an illegal casino in the club. Bhuiyan was taken in a seven-day remand in connection with four cases filed against him under the money laundering, narcotics, and firearms acts and for setting up a torture cell in the capital.

The drives are being conducted as part of the crackdown on illegal casinos and businesses after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina vented anger on some Juba League leaders for their illegal activities.

A team of RAB-1, led by executive magistrate Sarwoer Alam at RAB headquarters, went to House 144, Road 5 and Block D at Niketan around 12:30pm and detained Shamim, popularly known as GK Shamim, with huge amounts of money and liquor.

Sources said Shamim had another house in Niketon from where he was called and brought to the office of GKB Company Private Limited. The raid was conducted in the Juba League leader's presence.

Briefing reporters, RAB spokesman Lt Col Sarwar Bin Kashem said the RAB conducted the drive based on intelligence information. He also said Shamim was allegedly involved in extortion and tender manipulation.

The RAB conducted the raid first at his home and arrested his seven bodyguards, seized seven shot guns and a huge quantity of bullets from their possession. Later, they went to his office and took Shamim with them.

Sarwar Bin Kashem said they recovered Tk 1.80 crore in cash and FDR cheques worth Tk. 165 crore during the raid at Shamim’s residence. Of the FDR cheques, Tk. 140 crore was in the name of Shamim's mother.  Besides, they recovered some foreign liquor and firearms.

The RAB spokesman said Shamim ran a contractor business and there were allegations of tender manipulation and

extortion against him. Shamim will be charged under the Money Laundering Act for possessing a huge amount of money. Investigation will be conducted to find out how he amassed such money.

The executive magistrate at the RAB headquarters, Sarwoer Alam, said Shamim had been arrested on specific allegations. His mother had no business establishment, yet Tk. 140 crore was deposited as FDR in her name. Besides, there are allegations of extortion and tender manipulation against him.

Replying to a question, the executive magistrate said they did not know whether he was a member of a political party.

The drive against corrupt people would continue, she said, adding that it would be difficult but she would soldier on.

Shamim, cooperatives affairs secretary of Awami Juba League’s central committee, is known as a powerful contractor in Sabujbagh, Bashabo, Motijheel and other areas of Dhaka city. He controls most of the contracts of the public works department.

Sources said Shamim was a former leader of Juba Dal, the youth front of the BNP, and later joined the Juba League.

Sources in Juba League, however, claimed that there was no Juba League leader in the name of GK Shamim.
