STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
JCD gets new president, general secy

Fazlur Rahman Khokon and Iqbal Hosen Shyamol have been elected the new president and general secretary, respectively, of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal. The result was declared early yesterday after the sixth council of the student wing of the BNP was held throughout the night.

At the JCD council polls, Fazlur got 186 votes, while his nearest contestant, Kazi Rownakul Islam Shrabon, received 178 botes.

Iqbal got 139 votes, whereas his closest rival, Zakirul Islam, got only 78 votes.

A total of nine leaders contested for the presidential post and 19 leaders for

the general secretary posts. The JCD held the council for electing its president and general secretary after 27 years in line with a court injunction regarding its council.

The council was scheduled to meet at the BNP’s Naya Paltan office at 8pm on Wednesday.

However, power cuts forced the high command of the party to shift their venue to standing committee member Mirza Abbas’s residence.  The polling began at Mirza Abbas’s Shajahanpur residence around 8:40pm and continued till 12:30am.

Later. around 5:00am, the election results were announced. Among the 533 voters, a total of 481 councillors across the country exercised their voting rights.

In 1992, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and M Ilias Ali were elected the president and general secretary, respectively, of the JCD through direct voting. The last JCD committee was formed on October 14, 2014, with Rajib Ahsan as president and Akramul Hasan as general secretary.

BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, now living in London in self-exile, joined the council and speak to the councillors and candidates through a Skype video call.

Earlier, the council was scheduled to be held on September 14. But a Dhaka court had issued a temporary injunction staying the national council two days before the schedule was announced for a second time.

Hailing from Bogra, the newly elected JCD president, Khokon, completed his graduation from Dhaka University and was a resident of the Zahurul Huq Hall.

He was admitted to the Sociology Department at the academic year of 2003-2004.  He passed his Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exams from RDA Laboratory School in Bogra on 2001.

The newly elected general secretary, Iqbal Hossain Shyamol, is a native of Narsingdi district.

Hel graduated from the Persian language and literature department of Dhaka University and was a resident of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall. He enrolled in the academic session of 2004-2005 at the university.

Meanwhile, talking to reporters, the newly elected JCD president and general secretary said their main challenge would be to free BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and restoration of democracy.

Expressing their gratitude to BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman for holding a direct voting to elect JCD leadership, the new president said they would try their best to release BNP chairperson Khaleda from jail and restore democracy in the country.

“Our first challenge is to free Khaleda Zia from jail. We will establish democracy in Bangladesh through her release as well as ensure rights of the countrymen,” said Khokan.

New JCD general secretary pledged to organise and strengthen JCD in the universities of the country, Hossain Shamol said,

“The students of the Dhaka University failed to exercise their franchise in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) polls.  We will work to ensure the rights of the student of the university,” he said.
