Law enforcement agencies have cracked down on illegal casinos in clubs across the country, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said. “Permission should be taken from the authorities to run casinos, just like you need a licence to run a bar,” he told reporters at the Secretariat office yesterday.

He warned that drives would be conducted against not only casinos, but also against all illegal businesses. The minister said the law enforcement agencies moved against the casinos based on intelligence reports. The recent drives took place in two clubs in Karwan Bazar and Kalabagan, he added.

“Anyone from the administration who is involved in the illegal casino business will be punished,” he said.

Kamal also said the authorities were investigating illegal casino businesses and action would be taken against the culprits. He promised to show zero tolerance against militancy, terrorism, and drugs in keeping with the direction of the Prime Minister.

On Wednesday, a mobile court of the elite Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)

arrested 142 people from the Fakirapool Young Men’s Club for operating an illegal casino. The mobile court also conducted raids on other city clubs such as Golden Dhaka Bangladesh Casino in Banani and Wanderers Club in Fakirapool. The authorities seized more than Tk. 25 lakh, liquor, yaba pills, and casino boards.

In this connection, the law enforcement agencies also arrested Khalid

Mahmud Bhuiyan, organising secretary of the Dhaka (South) city unit of Juba League and president of the Fakirapool Young Men’s Club, from his residence on the same day.

Police sought 14 days remand for Khalid in connection with three cases filed against him under the money laundering, narcotics and firearms acts.

Till filing of this report at 7.45 pm, the Gulshan Thana police is taking him toward Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka.

Among the three cases, one was filed under the Firearms Act while another under The Narcotics Control Act as RAB seized three firearms, bullets, and 580 yaba pills from the possession of Khalid during the drive.

The other case was filed against him under the Money Laundering Act.
