182 businesses get CIP status for 2017

The government yesterday awarded as many as 182 businesspersons as CIPs (commercially important persons) for the year 2017 in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the country's economy.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi handed over the CIP cards to 136 businesspersons for their extraordinary performances in exports and 46 others for their status under the ex-officio category of different business chambers and trade bodies.

The card recipients under the ex-officio category are the directors of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Commerce ministry and Export Promotion Bureau of Bangladesh jointly organised the card giving ceremony at the InterContinental Dhaka yesterday.

During the programme, the commerce minister, Tipu Munshi said Bangladesh estimated $41.59 billion export earnings in the last fiscal year. It has possible only for the country’s businessmen who export their products different country in the world.

 “The government is going to set the export target at $60 billion for the next fiscal,” he said.

Sheikh Fazle Fahim, president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) said Bangladesh Ready-Made Garments Industry is the second position in the world in exporting garments products. In the fresh fish export, we are holding number three position in the world. It has possible only for the contribution of the private sectors industries.  

He said about 1 to 1.2 lakh foreigners holding mid-level jobs in Bangladesh are taking away around 10 billion dollars from the country every year.

“FBCCI is going to open a university in the country with the assistance of University of Toronto to improve the skill of the country’s professionals for working at mid level in a bid to keep this money in the country. Our mission is to give modern education to our young to keep the job in their hands,” the FBCCI president said.

Begum Fatima Yeasmin, vice-chairmen of Export Promotion Bureau said Bangladesh is the second largest in export growth in the world. To increase the growth further, the government is working with the businessmen to skill the manpower and increases the products quality.  

Among the 136 businesspersons who awarded CIP cards for their extraordinary performances in exports, Mohammod Humayun Kabir, chief executive officer of the New Dhaka Industries Limited was awarded.
