No breach of rules, claims DUCSU AGS

Our Correspondent, DU

The assistant general secretary (AGS) of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU),Md Saddam Hussain, has claimed that participants in the union election were admitted according to rules.

He accused its vice-president (VP), Nurul Haque Nur, of pursuing personal agendas instead of working for the union or the university.

Saying the VP had never prioritised attending DUCSU activities, AGS Md Saddam Hussain claimed that Nur, along with his own platform, the Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council (BGSRPC), WHICH had spearheaded last year’s quota reform movement, were working to turn Bangladesh into a fundamentalist state.

Saddam, also the Chhatra League’s Dhaka University unit general secretary, came up with the remarks at a press

conference at the DUCSU seminar room yesterday (Tuesday).

His remarks came following questions about Nur’s absence at the press conference. “Nur has a non-cooperative attitude towards DUCSU programmes. He was absent from today’s Education Day programme, wreath placing programme on National Mourning Day (August 15) and so on,” he added.

“We will discuss the issue of Golam Rabbani regarding his post of DUCSU general secretary after resigning from his Chhatra League post. The decision will be taken as per the constitution.”

Regarding allegations that 34 Chhatra League activists were “illegally” enrolled in the Business Faculty’s evening programme (Master of Tax Management), Saddam said: “They have been admitted as per the guidelines of the faculty. It is they who decided to admit the university’s students without a written test.” Only DUCSU leaders elected from the Chhatra League panel were present at the programme.

Among the 25 DUCSU members, 23 are nominated by the Chhatra League.
