‘Humiliated’ college student attempts suicide in Dhaka

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

A college student reportedly tried to commit suicide by jumping off the college building at Mirpur-10 in the city around noon yesterday. The boy was upset as the college authorities had misbehaved with his parents.

Confirming the incident, a sub-inspector (SI) of Kafrul police station said the victim, Shariar Alam Akash, is a second-year student of the business section in Banophool Adibashi Green Heart College (BAGHC).

According to the police, Akash felt humiliated after the college authorities phoned his parents yesterday morning and berated them for his poor exam results. The boy was at home at that time.

Later, he went to his college and jumped off from the third floor of the college building. “He is undergoing treatment at the hospital,” the SI said.

However, the college authorities claimed that Akash had fallen down from the second floor stairs. He was taken to the National Institute of Neuroscience at Agargaon and he was doing well, the college authorities said.

BAGHC Rector Sajal Chandra Sarker said Akash is due to appear for the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) exam next year. They had called his father to come to the college yesterday because of his poor results in the last exam.  After coming to know of this, Akash had left the classroom and this was what happened then, the rector said.

In the meantime, students of the college started vandalising the cars of the college authorities following a rumour that Akash had died in hospital. Around 1,000 students of BAGHC’s school branch were trapped inside the campus during the violence. They were later handed over to their guardians.

College students said Akash had not fared well in the final exam whose results were published recently. The teachers and other college officials had rebuked him and also summoned his parents.

They blamed the teachers for putting pressure on Akash that led him to attempt suicide and also demanded justice for him.

On his part, SI Nasir Uddin said extra forces were deployed on the college campus and the situation was under control. Senior police officials were talking to the college authorities and the victim’s family, he added.

In December last year, a similar incident occurred at Viqarunnisa Noon School & College. A Class IX student, Aritri Adhikari (16), had committed suicide at her Shantinagar home allegedly due to humiliation by her teachers. Students had protested against the incident and a case was filed in this regard.
