More than 4,000 electric poles are currently standing in the middle of different roads in the Gazipur City Corporation area, imperilling vehicular movement. The poles appeared on the middle points of the roads after the city corporation authorities recently expanded the roads. However, the Palli Bidyut Samity (PBS) has not taken any initiative to relocate these poles yet though the city corporation has repeatedly requested them to do so. As a result, all vehicles travelling on these roads face difficulties. Locals are also worried about accidents at any point of time.

On visiting the Cerdi Road near the PBS-1 office, it could be seen that the city corporation has already completed the widening of the road. All the electric poles on the right side of this road are now standing in the middle of the road. Vehicles are constantly moving on this busy road. Not only the Cerdi Road, most of the roads in the city corporation area are now risky for vehicles for the same reason.

Nazmul Alam, an official of Eon Group who works in the factory next to Cerdi Road, said, “Trucks, minibuses, private cars and auto-rickshaws are always running on this road. Any accident can occur at any time as the poles are now in the middle of the road. This road has become particularly dangerous at night.”

Gazipur, one of the largest city corporations in the country, is now undertaking various development projects. Most of these developments works involve the construction of roads and their expansion in the city area. At present, the main obstacle to this development work is the array of electric poles on the roads. Despite repeated notices to the PBS authorities, they have not taken any initiative to relocate the poles. That is why the city corporation has been carrying out development works on the roads while keeping the electric poles on the roads.

Sources in the Gazipur City Corporation said the residents of this large city have long suffered from narrow and broken roads.

After taking over the mayoral post of the city corporation for the second term, advocate Md. Jahangir Alam started development work by extending roads. Currently, there are 7,500km of roads in the city areas, the mayor said. The mayor is working on a special plan to make Gazipur a modern city. As part of this special plan, he has taken initiatives to extend all roads of 57 wards of the city areas from 30ft to 60ft.

Now, however, the main obstacle to this work is the 4,000-odd electric poles on various roads of the city. Most of the roads in Gazipur city were 8ft to 10ft wide in the past.

The city corporation authorities claimed that the PBS authorities set up electric poles all over the city areas without any planning.

The mayor, Mohammed Jahangir Alam, said, “The people’s sufferings have been caused by the indifference, lack of coordination and unplanned installation of the poles by the PBS. We have already asked them to relocate the poles before the construction of the roads, but they have not taken any initiative in this regard. To mitigate the public’s sufferings, we are working on the development works of the roads very quickly. As a result, we had to construct the roads while leaving electric poles on many roads. It has created a risk for the people. Again, after the poles are removed, the roads would have to be re-excavated. That could escalate the cost of development of the roads.” That is why the mayor has sought the cooperation and coordination of the PBS.

The senior general manager of Gazipur PBS-1, Jaboraj Chandra Paul, said, "We do not have the budget to transfer such a large number of power poles in this city on such a huge scale. However, in view of the petition of the city corporation, we have started a survey of the number of poles to be relocated following the existing road development works. The initiative would be taken after preparing a project in this respect.”
