Two arrested with 1,102 bottles of phensidyl

BSS, Rangpur

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-13) has seized 1,102 bottles of smuggled phensidyl, a truck and arrested two presumed drug traffickers from Shantipur point on the Rangpur-Dhaka highway of the district. “On a tip off, an operational team of the Crime Prevention Special Company of RAB-13 from Rangpur conducted a sudden raid there, seized the smuggled phensidyl, truck and arrested the drug traffickers on Saturday evening,” a press release said here yesterday. The arrested drug traffickers are driver of the stone-laden Dhaka bound truck from Burimari Land Port (BLP) in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat Sirajul Islam, 30, and his helper Saminul Islam, 18, of different villages in Dimla upazila of Nilphamari district.  “During interrogation, arrested drug traffickers admitted that they had been involved in trafficking and trading of drugs like phensidyl while carrying stones by truck from BLP in Lalmonirhat to Dhaka and its adjoining areas for a long time,” the release added.

Minister off to London to join seminar

BSS, Dhaka

Social Welfare Minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed yesterday left here for London, United Kingdom (UK) boarding on a flight of Emirates airlines this morning to attend a seminar. The minister will lead an eight-member delegation comprising Social Services Department Director General Gazi Mohammad Nurul Kabir and Neuro-Developmental Disability (NDD) Protection Trust Managing Director Md Moshiur Rahman, a release said. During the visit, Nuruzzaman will visit the National Autism Society and attend a seminar on autism in London. The minister is expected to return home on September 22 next.

Award distribution ceremony held

Many canals and lakes in the capital Dhaka fell prey to illegal grabbers and pollution, and these illegally occupied water bodies would be revived to make them fit for plying of lighter water vessels. This was stated by LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Md Tazul Islam on Saturday at the “Bill Collection Award” giving ceremony arranged by the Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) at a city hotel.  “Many canals and lakes in Dhaka city have been occupied and polluted due to various reasons. These canals and lakes will be retrieved from the illegal occupants,” he said. The minister said the water bodies, after recovering from illegal occupation, would be re-excavated to turn those into water channels to introduce water transportation there likewise the Hatirjheel.
