DIG prisons Partha fails to secure bail in graft case

A Dhaka court yesterday scrapped bail plea filed by Deputy Inspector General of prisons Partha Gopal Bonik in a graft case. Partha’s lawyer Kamrul Islam pleaded for his bail. Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) lawyer Mosharraf Hossain Kazal, however opposed the plea. After hearing both the sides, Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge KM Imrul Qayesh passed the order, scrapping bail plea of the accused. Partha, who was working at Sylhet Central Jail, was shown arrested by ACC on July 28 as it recovered Taka 80 lakh from his North Green Road flat. “He did not declare the money in his income tax file, making us to believe it was amassed illegally,” ACC director Mohammad Yousuf said on that day. Partha during his arrest, said the car he was using and is kept at the parking space owned by him, was actually belongs to his friend. Of the money, Partha said, Taka 30 lakh was given to him by his mother-in-law and 50 lakh was earned by him during his years in service.

Ex-customs commissioner Shahabuddin Nagari jailed

A Dhaka court yesterday sent former customs commissioner AHM Shahabuddin Nagari to jail after scrapping his bail in a case lodged over amassing illegal wealth. Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge KM Imrul Qayesh passed the order as Nagari surrendered before the court and pleaded for bail. Senior lawyer Najibullah Hiru stood for Nagari’s plea, while Anti- Corruption Commission (ACC) counsel Mir Mohammad Ali Salam opposed the plea of the accused.

According to the case documents, Shahabuddin Nagari submitted wealth statement with false information as he amassed illegal wealth of Taka 1.64 crore. Deputy Director of ACC Jahangir Alam filed the case against Nagari on July 21.
