Ready to work even as OC

Says new DMP chief
Staff Reporter, Dhaka

The new commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Md Shafiqul Islam, yesterday (Sunday) stated that he would serve at the police stations himself if necessary to make the police people-friendly. “If the public complain about not being treated fairly and do not receive the desired service in any police station under my jurisdiction, then I will take over the post of OC in that police station. I’ll personally attend to the needs of some of the citizens,” said the commissioner during a media call at the DMP media centre.

He said all activities in the police stations must be monitored so that there are no cases of harassment. The question that has arisen is that the officials-in-charge of various police stations (OCs) are staying in Dhaka. Many of them also have many charges against them. However, deputy commissioners and (DCs) and additional deputy commissioners (ADCs) have been transferred but the OCs have not been transferred.

In response to these questions, the DMP commissioner highlighted his commitment.

He also said there was a stark difference between working at the district and metropolitan levels, and, hence, the OCs can be transferred within the city unless there are specific complaints against them. On the recent transfer of DMP ADCs and DCs outside Dhaka, he said, “There’s a difference between the work of senior officials and OCs.”

Shafiqul Islam said the responsibilities of the OCs in the metropolitan area are different from those of the district cities. “There is no work in the district after 10pm. But here the OC has to work till 2am.” He said, “There is an inspector (investigation) at the police station. Now they are being appointed as OCs somewhere.”

The DMP chief said street knowledge is required to work at a police station but DMP was preparing new officers and posting them in accordance with their experience.

He further said, “We must also ensure that any person can file a case or enter a general diary without getting harassed or getting victimized at police stations. The feeling of getting co-operation from the police must be evoked in the person when he leaves the police station.” Shafiqul Islam said he had called all the DMP OCs after taking charge. They have been told that if a person is victimised by a policeman in the police station, the DMP commissioner will not make any attempt to protect the official.

The DMP commissioner said, “I will try to ensure that innocent people are not harassed and extorted.”

Reporters highlighted a case of land grabbing from a freedom fighter in the capital’s Lalbagh. In that case, the DC was temporarily suspended after the incident. But there has been a divisional lawsuit keeping the OC in his position. In this regard, the new DMP commissioner said, “Whose responsibility is what will be taken into consideration and he will look into the papers.”

About traffic cognition, the DMP commissioner said he has directed the senior officers, including traffic officials, to be on the field during the office opening and closing times.
