Student bodies seek resignation of BCL ex-president, GS

There is a debate raging now regarding the moral fallout of Shovon-Rabbani and whether they should resign from DUCSU and Senate as well. Many teachers and students of the university say they have no moral right to be members of the DUCSU GS and students representatives of the Senate for the crimes that led to their sacking by their own party. On the other hand, there is no clear directive in the DUCSU constitution for expulsion or suspension on grounds of moral misdemeanour. However, the vice-chancellor, who is also the president of DUCSU, has the special power to take such punitive measures.

On September 14, Prime Minister and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina selected the new central leadership and asked the president and general secretary, Rejwanul Haque Choudhury Shovon and Golam Rabbani to resign.

Ten months before the expiry of the term of the present committee of the BCL, the president and general secretary have lost their office.

The decision has come at a time when the ruling party's student wing is suffering from a severe image crisis.

BCL senior vice-president Al Nahian Khan Joy and joint general secretary Lekhak Bhattacharjee have been given the charges of president and general secretary.

Page four of the DUCSU Constitution states the vice-chancellor’s power as, "The president shall have power at any time in the best interest of union to dismiss any office bearer or member of Executive Committee or to dissolve the Executive Committee as a whole and call for fresh election..."

On the other hand, Article 12 of the Constitution states about the membership of the Executive Parliament, "In case any member of the Executive Committee or office bearer tenders his resignation or dies or is removed from office the vacancy shall be filled up for the remaining period of his incumbency by the usual system of election prescribed herein."

In this regard, DUCSU vice-president (VP) Nurul Haque Nur said: "Since many allegations have been raised against him, he has lost the BCL post. The allegations have been proved. So I think he has no moral right to remain in the DUCSU GS post either.”
