Afghanistan annihilate Bangladesh

Mohammad Nabi cracked an unbeaten 84 that steered Afghanistan to muster a challenging 164-6 against the hosts in their second match of the Tri-nation series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur yesterday. Afghanistan fielded the same playing XI against Bangladesh what they drafted against Zimbabwe in their first match so that they can carry on the winning streak against the hosts who scored 139 to lose the match. Afghan captain Rashid Khan chose to bat after winning the flip on Mirpur track in order to compile a fighting total on the board to put pressure on the home side.

But fast-bowler Mohammad Saifuddin shattered their expectation when he clean bowled opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who raised storm with his bat in the previous match, with a perfect delivery of away swing around the off-stump line that provided them a dream start for Bangladesh when the visitors are yet to open their account.

By then, Shakib Al Hasan broke his wicket barren with a tossed up delivery when Hazaratullah Zazai got tempted to go after it but his slog went high in the air towards deep mid-wicket where Liton Kumar Das palmed it.

Saifuddin dented Afghanistan with hitting spree when Najeeeb Tarakai trekked back to pull the short ball into the crowd having hit a six on the previous delivery but there was Sabbir Rahman stationed in the deep to spoon it while the tourists were sprawling at 19 for three.

Shakib once again picked up wickets when he deceived Nijibullah Zadran with an arm-ball. Bangladesh ended the powerplay successfully with the over. They stemmed Afghan by 64-4 in 10 overs.

Mohammad Nabi, who retired from Test to focus more on shorter formats of cricket, appeared at the crease to join well-set Asghar Afghan and launched its tilt over local bowlers. They clubbed the bowlers ruthlessly and pulled together 79 for the fifth-wicket stand that surpassed 100-run mark.

Saifuddin, most successful bowler of the home side, bettered his previous Twenty20 bowling performance to remove Asghar, who smashed 32-40 with two sixes and three fours and Gulbadin Nabi in the same over, the dismissals that did not stem the scoring spree for Afghanistan.

But Nabi was still at wicket and continued his aggression hitting six after six and four after four. He clubbed an unbeaten 84 that actually propelled Afghanistan to 164.

The experienced Afghan all-rounder tonked seven big shots over the boundary along with three fours in his 54-ball unbeaten knock.
