DL DESK, Dhaka
Recalling Shah Abdul Karim on 10th death anniversary

Legendary Baul singer-composer Shah Abdul Karim will be remembered on his 10th death anniversary today. To mark the occasion, Channel i will air a special music show ‘Gaane Gaane Sokal Suru’ today at 7:30am. Paying respect to Shah Abdul Karim, Dr Biswajit Ray, Lovely Dey and Baul Abdul Rahman will render the songs of Shah Abdul Karim at the show.

On the other hand, Shubachan Natya Shangshad will stage its acclaimed theatrical production ‘Mohajoner Nao’ tomorrow evening at the Experimental Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in Segun Bagicha of the capital.

The play’s story, based on the life and philosophy of the late Baul Samrat Shah Abdul Karim, is written by Shakoor Majid and directed as well as choreographed by Sudip Chakroborty.

The 33rd production of Subachan narrates the story of Shah Abdul Karim and his journey into the realm of music through different sequences based on his biography.

Karim was born on February 15, 1916 at Ujan Dhol village in Derai upazila of Sunamganj district.  Growing up in poverty and facing hardship, he started expressing his thoughts and emotions musically from a very early age. Ektara, a traditional single string instrument has been his constant companion. However, poverty forced him to seek work in agricultural labour. As he was growing up, he received training on spiritual and Baul music from Shah Ibrahim Mastan Baksh.

Shah Abdul Karim wrote and composed over 1,500 songs. These songs are organised in six books: Aftab Sangeet, Gano Sangeet, Kalnir Dheu, Dholmela, Bhatir Chithi and Kalnir Kooley. Bangla Academy has translated ten of his songs into English. Baul legend Shah Abdul Karim won the hearts of millions of Bangla music lovers with masterpieces like ‘Bonde Maya Lagaise’, ‘Kano Piritee Barailarey Bondhu’, ‘Gari Cholena Cholena’, ‘Ami Koolhara Kolonkini’, ‘Agey Ki Shundor Din Kataitam’ and many more.

He was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 2001 for his outstanding contribution to the field of music. He also received the Drouhee Kotha-Shahitayk Abdur Rouf Choudhury Award in 2000.

Shah Abdul Karim died of respiratory problems in Sylhet on September 12, 2009. l
