Janmastami celebrated

Janmashtami, the birth festival of Lord Sri Krishna and one of the major religious festivals of the members of the Hindu community, was observed in Rajshahi yesterday with due religious fervour and jubilation.

On the occasion, different religious and socio-cultural organisations arranged various programmes including prayer to Lord Krishna, rally, discussion meeting, songs praising Krishna and cultural functions.

Number of people, some dressed as Lord Krishna, Krishna’s father Basudev, mother Deboki, brother Balaram and maternal uncle Kongsha, on foot, on over pick-up vans and trucks joined the traditional Janmashtami rally.

Brought out from Shaheb Bazaar Hanumanjir Akhra, the rally organised by Janmashtami Ujjapan Parishad, Rajshahi city unit paraded different roads amid stringent security before ending at the same place.

Polythene factory unearthed

A mobile court of Chattogram district administration yesterday unearthed a clandestine polythene factory in Chowdhuryhat rail station area under Hathazari upazila of the district.

The court also seized 500 kilogram of banned polythene during the drive after conducting a drive at a polythene factory. However, neither the owner nor any employee was present during the drive.

Acting on secrete information, executive magistrate, also upazila Nirbahi officer of Hathazari Mohammad Ruhul Amin conducted the drive in cooperation with police personnel this afternoon and sealed the polythene factory off in the aforesaid area. The mobile court also seized the equipment used in the manufacturing of polythene. Legal action will be taken against the owner of the factory, Ruhul Amin, said.

‘Drug peddler’ arrested

In an anti-crime drive, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested an alleged drug-peddler with 5.2 kilograms (kg) of heroin here Thursday afternoon.

RAB sources said the arrested person was identified as Nazibur Rahman, 45, son of Nur Muhammad of Kodalkati village under Chapainawabganj district.

On a tip-off, a team of RAB conducted a raid at Sarnagpur village under Godagari Upazila and arrested the person with huge contraband items worth around Tk 5.02 crore around 12.45 noon. A case has been recorded with Godagari Police Station and the arrested person with the seized goods was handed over to police.
