Six of a family among 7 killed in Cumilla road accident

Road accidents involving around a dozen vehicles, mostly motorbikes and buses, have claimed at least 10 lives and injured scores in four districts yesterday. In Cumilla, seven people, including six members of a family, were killed and four others were injured in a road accident on Cumilla-Noakhali regional highway at Jamtola Lalmai upazila. The deceased were identified as JashimUddin, 47, his mother Sakhina Begum, 70, wife Selina Begum, 42, two sons—Shipon, 22 and Hridoy, 18 and daughter Nipu Akter, 13, hailing from Nangolkot upazila and the auto-rickshaw driver Saimon Hossain, 22 of Laksham upazila of the district. The accident took place when the CNG-run auto-rickshaw collided with the  bus, leaving five auto-rickshaw passengers dead on the spot, and three others injured around 12 pm, said Md Badrul AlamTalukdar, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Lalmai Police Station.

Two of the injured died while undergoing treatment at Baghmara Health Complex. Police recovered the bodies and sent those to Comilla Medical College Hospital morgue.

In Lakshmipur, a 17-year-old college student named Ibrahim was killed in a road accident on GB road. He was a student of class eleven at Dala Bazar Degree College.

Azizul Rahman, inspector of Lakshmipur police station, said: “Ibrahim lost control of his bike and fell into a drain. He got severe injuries in his head.”

He was later taken to a local hospital, where the duty doctors declared him dead.

In Rajbari, a bus driver was killed as a microbus hit him at near Jamider Bridge area on Dhaka-Khulna highway of Goalanda upazila in the morning.

The victim was identified as Ali Hossain, 35, son of late Aziz Gazi, hailing from Tilak village of Rupsa upazial in Khulna.

Masud Parvez Bhuiya, OC of Ahladipur Police Station said a microbus hit Ali when he was repairing a bus beside road, leaving him dead on the spot.

Police seized the microbus but microbus driver fled the scene.

In Gopalganj, a motorcyclist was killed and another injured as a Bangladesh Army bus hit the motorcycle at Ratail area on Dhaka-Khulna highway of Kashiani upazila in the morning.

The deceased was identified as Habib Sharif, 40, son of Taher Sharif of Barashur village of the upazila.

The injured Enayet Hossain, 49, hails from the same upazila.

Md Azizur Rahman, OC of Kashiani Police Station said that the accident has taken place when a Dhaka-bound bus of Bangladesh Army from Khulna has hit the motorcycle carrying the victims at the area.

Habib has died on the spot, while Enayet sustained severe injury. Later, locals have taken the injured to Gopalganj General Hospital, he said.

Police seized the bus and arrested its driver, the OC said.
