BCB finally picks Domingo as nat’l team head coach

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) finally announced Russell Craig Domingo as the new head coach for the Bangladesh national cricket team. The BCB has inked a two-year contract with the 44-year-old South African coach.

The BCB President Nazmul Hassan Papon made the disclosure to media after holding a closed-door meeting at the reception center of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.  Papon also informed that the quadragenarian Proteas coach is expected to arrive here in Dhaka on August 21 to take charge of the Tigers ahead of their home series against Afghanistan and tri-nation against Zimbabwe and Afghanistan in September.

“We’ve already appointed fast-bowling coach Charl Langeveldt and spin-bowling coach Daniel Vettori. So, we’ve needed to appoint coaches in some places but we’re yet to fix coaches for those positions. We had a major issue of appointing a head coach. We’re happy to see the interest of the coaches across globe because all the available high-profile coaches have showed their keen interest to work in Bangladesh. I thanked them all,” said Nazmul Hassan Papon.

“The selection of the head coach was very difficult for us because the famed and high-profile coaches have communicated with us showing their keen interests for becoming head coach of the Bangladesh national team. At the last moment, there were three coaches in our short list. None of them was droppable. So, we had to set some criteria to pick the right one,” Nazmul told media.

“Our first criterion was availability. Many wish to be our head coach but they did not come at this moment because of their commitments in other places. For this, someone informed us to come after three months or five months or six months. But someone informed us to come at any time to work with us. Second criterion was full-time. Someone wanted to give us time on the basis of 100 days, or 200 days or 300 days. Even if someone wanted to give us time before a tournament or a series only. Considering all those things in mind, we’ve fixed to appoint who are available right now and can give us full-time. Overall, we got two coaches at the last moment after considering those criteria. Then we’ve confirmed Russell Craig Domingo as the head coach of the national team today (Saturday). In fact, we confirmed him yesterday night. Officially we disclose it to you all,” he added.

The factors behind Russell Domingo’s selection, the BCB president said, “You all know that Russell Domingo has a long and vast coaching experience. He started his coaching career comparatively at a young age. He comes first with South Africa team in 2012 as a national coach. Then he appointed head coach in 2013. He coached South Africa in T20 World Cup and 50-over World Cup in 2014 and 2015 respectively. He coached South Africa till 2017. Still he works in High Performance (HP) team in South Africa.”

“As per the talks and agreement what h made with us, he will join his Bangladesh job in August 21 as we’ve a Test against Afghanistan and a tri-nation against Zimbabwe and Afghanistan. Then we’ve a tour to India, where we’ve games of Test Championship and Twenty20 series in November.”

“For his availability, we’ve chosen him as our head coach. We’ve next 50-over World Cup, where some more fresh bloods will be entered into the squad. We have needed some players as replacement. From that point of view, we’ve to groom some young players in planned way. For this, we have to give them a chance. Russell Domingo wants to work with the players of Under-19, High Performance, Emerging Team and A team by integrating them. And he is doing such works in South Africa for so long. He gave a presentation of a long-term plan before us. Others also gave. But he gave us directly and others do that on Skype and teleconferences.”

It was learnt from the BCB media that Domingo was eagerly looking ahead to his new challenge.

“It’s a massive honour to be appointed the head coach of the Bangladesh national cricket team. I have followed Bangladesh’s progress with keen interest and I am extremely excited to assist the team in reaching the goals that they are capable of.”

“I look forward to continuing the ongoing development of current players whilst also looking towards the future and developing some new bright stars from within the talent pool of Bangladesh cricket,” he added.
