Call to bring back fugitive killers of Bangabandhu

The National Mourning Day and 44th martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was observed in metropolitan cities yesterday with a call for effective steps to bring the fugitive killers of the Bangabandhu back to Bangladesh so that the murderers get their deserved punishment.

Staff Reporter from Barishal: Barishal district administration, city and district units of Bangladesh Awami League and its front-organisations and different other political parties observed the day in a befitting manner. The day-long programmes, included Qurankhawani, discussion on life and achievements of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, , children art competition, blood donation, feeding the poor, cultural function, poetry recitation and placing wreaths at the portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Abdur Rab Serniabat and other victims of the August 15.

Advocate Talukdar Md Yunus, secretary of district AL and BCC mayor Serniabat Sadik Abdullah paid tribute to Bangabandhu, Shaheed Abdur Rab Serniabat by placing wreath at their portraits at Barisal Aswani Kumar Hall and led a mourning procession in the city yesterday morning. Local MP Jebunnesa Afroz, divisional commissioner, BMP commissioner also paid homage to Bangabandhu marking the day.

Our Correspondent from Rajshahi: Various government and non-government organisations, political parties, socio-cultural organisations and educational institutions, including Rajshahi University and RUET, observed the mournful day in a befitting manner.  Rajshahi city unit of Bangladesh Awami League hoisted the party flags at half-mast in the morning. AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, President of AL Rajshahi city unit and Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation placed tribute at portrait of Father of the Nation and four national leaders at their party office.

Later, leaders and activists of AL brought out a mourning rally from Kumarpara area and paraded various streets of the city. A discussion meeting was held in the city where a large number of people including government and non- government officials, freedom fighters, political leaders and socio-cultural activists were present. They demanded for bringing back of all absconding killers of Bangabandhu.

Various organisations, including Sammilita Sangskritik Jote, district unit of Bangabandhu Parishad, and Ila Mitra SangskritikSangha garlanded the portrait of Father of the Nation at Bangabandhu Chattar (Alupatti).

Our Correspondent from Rangpur: The day was observed in Rangpur with befitting manner yesterday. People from all walks of life placed wreath in the mural of Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

District Administration brought out mourning procession in the city. Later, a discussion was held at Rangpur Town Hall. KM Tariqul Islam, divisional commissioner, Rangpur division was chief guest. Momtaz Uddin Ahmed, Advocate Rezaul Islam Razu, President and Secretary, District Awami League, Safiur Rahman Sofi, Tushar Kanti Mondol, President, and Secretary, City Awami League, Devdas Bhattacharia, DIG, Rangpur Ranz, Mohammad Abu Sufian, Acting Police Commissioner, Rangpur Metropolitan Police, Biplob Kumar Sarker, Police Super Rangpur were special guests of the occasion. Asib ahsan, Deputy Commissioner, Rangpur was in chair.  The speakers discussed the life sketch of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. District Administration chalked out various programmes, including painting competition, doa mahfil.

BSS adds from Khulna: Khulna city and district units of Bangladesh Awami League and its front-organisations and different other political parties observed the day in a befitting manner.

The day began with hoisting of national flag at half mast in all government, semi-government, autonomous and private buildings. A mourning procession was brought out in the city that began from KDA New Market premises and ended at the sculptor of Bangabandhu on Khulna Betar premises yesterday morning.

KCC Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque, freedom fighters, government high officials and leaders of civil society, among others, also attended the rally. Later, they placed wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu.

Distribution of food among the destitute and screening of film show on life and works of Bangabandhu and special milad mahfils and prayers at all religious institutions were also held. Besides, competitions on painting, essay writing, Hamd and Naat and recitation of poems, discussions focusing the life and works of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and national history were arranged in the educational institutions and other places.

Khulna District Administration organised a discussion. Directorate of Youth Development distributed prize among the winners of essay, art, hamd, naat and poem recitation competitions and cheques among freedom fighters at DC’s conference room.

Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Lokman Hossain Mia addressed the meeting as chief guest with deputy commissioner Md Helal Hossain in the chair. A book show was held at Umesh Chandra Public Library about Bangabandhu and Liberation War.

Khulna District Information Office, Islamic Foundation, Khulna City Corporation (KCC), Khulna WASA, Khulna Betar, Khulna University (KU), Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), Khulna Press Club, Khulna Union of Journalists (KUJ) and other organisations observed the day separately.

The city and district units of Awami League and its front organisations also observed various programmes marking the day here and upazila headquarters in a befitting manner.
