Case filed against Barrister Suman

STAFF REPORTER, DHAKA
Case filed against Barrister Suman

A case was filed yesterday with the Dhaka Cyber Tribunal against the Supreme Court (SC) lawyer, barrister Sayedul Haque Suman, on charges of making derogatory remarks about the Hindu community in a Facebook post. Gautam Kumar, a social worker and a resident of the city’s Bhashantek, filed the case against Barrister Suman yesterday noon. After recording the plaintiff’s statement, Judge Ash Shams Jaglul Hossain of the Dhaka Cyber Tribunal directed the officer-in-charge of Bhasantek police station to investigate the matter and submit a probe report within 30 days.

Advocate Sumon Kumar Roy appeared before the tribunal on behalf of the petitioner. According to the allegations brought in the case, Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Suman made disparaging comments against the Hindu community in a Facebook post on July 19. His comments not only damaged the image of Hindu society but also hurt the religious sentiments of many, it claimed. Such remarks can also provoke violence, disrupting the law and order situation in the country, the case added.

The petitioner said Barrister Suman on July 19 gave a Facebook post demeaning the Hindu religion. The barrister has made a “false and objectionable” statement on the Hindu religion, the petitioner alleged.

On the other hand, talking to this correspondent, Barrister Suman said he has already filed a general dairy with Shahbagh police station on May 28 this year, stating that some fake Facebook pages had been opened using his name.

“I did not make any comments against the Hindu community. The comment was circulated from the fake Facebook page. This was made only to harass me,” he added.
