Bangladesh cricket team held their first training session at the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo yesterday following their arrival in Sri Lanka in the midst of tight security.

Fast-bowler Taskin Ahmed and left-arm spinner Taijul Islam also joined Tigers’ tent from Karnataka in India. A total of nine players took part in the opening day’s practice session, where Taijul Islam, Mehidy Hasan Miraj and Mosaddek Hossain Saikat bowled against Tamim Iqbal, while Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman bowled against Soumya Sarkar at nets.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad then batted after Tamim and Soumya left.  Fast-bowler Rubel Hossain will join the team very shortly.

After the practice session, Taijul Islam spoke to media, where he said that none is clearly favourites and those who will play better cricket in given day will be victorious.

“The place our team has remained is in good stead. None can tell that our team is now in bad position than Sri Lanka,” said Taijul Islam, who went to Karnataka to play Dr (Capt.) Thimmappiah Memorial Tournament, where he bowled well.

“But those who will play better cricket will be done well in the series. We’ll try all to play better cricket,” Islam told media.

“We’re all helpful and assist each other. Hopefully better thing will be done. Everybody is keen to do well,” he added.

Taijul Islam has been picked as a replacement of Shakib Al Hasan. When asked him to replicate Shakib’s performance, Taijul said that he can’t be replaced by Shakib but he will try his best for the team’s cause.

“I can’t be replacement of Shakib bhai because he fills all through the gap. He is No 1 al-rounder in world cricket rankings,” he replied.

“But if I get a chance to play in his place, I will try to do my best,” he added.

Mohammad Mithun, Sabbir Rahman, Anamul Haque will fly to Colombo to join the team for the series today (Monday). Fielding coach Ryan Cook also joined Tigers in Colombo, where he supervised the fielding session with the players.

AFP adds from Colombo: The Bangladesh cricket team arrived in Sri Lanka amid tight security on Saturday, the first foreign sporting side to visit the island since the deadly Easter attacks earlier this year.
