DU BCL leader shot at
UNB, Dhaka

A leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) sustained a gunshot wound on Saturday night. The injured, Meshkat Hossain, is the deputy training secretary of BCL's central committee. He is a residential student of Masterda Surja Sen Hall. Witnesses said Meshkat and his friends were sitting in front of the hall on Saturday night when suddenly an explosion was heard. Later, he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors removed a bullet from his right leg. There is an allegation that he carries firearms on the campus. Meshkat told UNB he "suddenly noticed" that he was bleeding after returning to his hall but "did not understand" how he had been injured.


Speaker returns home from New York
UNB, Dhaka

Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Saturday returned home from the USA after joining a parliamentary forum in New York. The Parliamentary Forum at the 2019 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development and Related Meetings was held at the UN Headquarters. The Speaker addressed 'Growing inequality and distrust in government: Breaking Cycle' session at the conference on July 15. Dr Shirin also attended a discussion arranged by Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the United Nations.


Two injured in AC blast
UNB, Dhaka

Two employees of a fast-food outlet sustained burns in Shonirakhra after the air-conditioner of the shop exploded on Saturday. Locals rescued Md Saiful Islam, 21, and Md Imran, 20, around 10am and took them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Burn unit's Dr Partha Sanker Pal said Saiful and Imran suffered 70 per cent and 30 per cent burns respectively. Their windpipes were also damaged. Duty Officer of Fire Service headquarters Luma Khandker said the victims worked at 'Bergaro' at Goalbari intersection. "They were injured when the AC exploded," Luma said.Imran said they smelled something burning after opening the shop and then there was a loud explosion.


Convicted fugitive surrenders before court
BSS, Khulna

A convicted accused of a murder case has surrendered before the Khulna court yesterday. A Khulna court on July 16 awarded death penalty to Shariful Islam for killing Exim Bank official Perveen Sultana and her father Elias Chowdhury. Shariful Islam yesterday surrendered before the court of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3.pShariful Islam, son of Sheikh Abdul Jalil of Labanchara thana, was absconding since the murder. The court in his absentia awarded him death penalty with five other accused of the case. Perveen Sultana and her father were killed in their Khulna house on September 18, 2015.


Views-sharing meeting held

A day-long meeting for exchanging views and sharing experience and learning methods among the excluded  dalit and mainstream communities was held yesterday at Kheyali Group Theater auditorium of the city. The programme Titled ‘Juba Sampriti (youth friendship) was jointly organised by ActionAid Bangladesh and Reach to un-reached (RUN), development organisations for narrowing distances among the different classes of the society. Dr Habibur Rahman, human rights activist, presided over the programme and Rafiqul Alam, executive Director RUN, gave the welcome address in the programme.
